I am contemplating leaving Victoria for warmer climate and lifestyle change. I have a friend in Hervey Bay and I know there is no surf there but Double Island point and Rainbow beach are close. Is there regular and surfable waves there or more likely I would have to travel down to Noosa. I also have a mate in Pemberton WA that I would like to visit. Does anyone have any info about the surf around there. Cheers.

Hey mate, Pemberton is next to Margaret River so heaps of heavy surf around the region and I think Noosa and just above are as high as it goes for Surf pretty much. Get a wetty its less crowded down here?

It's only less crowded lately because the weather is so ****. The last 7 or 8 months have probably been the worst of my life and maybe a change of scene is needed. Hopefully I will get to visit both places over the next few months and see what happens. It looks like the surf would be a bit more mellow in Queensland

DI & rainbow are consistent, but the crowds are thick when it's on. if you drive north there's a decent wave at agnes. neither is a short drive though, you're looking at around 2 hours to get to a beach in both directions, and both DI/rainbow access are tide dependent.

if you're a surfer, hervey bay is a poor choice to base yourself

Agree with Stamp, I would look at Sunshine Coast anywhere from Caloundra to Noosa has lots of surf options , plus you can always drive up the beach to get to DI if it's on ??

Cheers for the info. I was considering Hervey bay mainly because I had a mate I could stay with. As we all know accommodation options are at an all time low, so not the best time to head up that way without a definite place to stay.

HB is in between a rock and a hard place, but you can always get to Fraser, ****loads of waves if you have the appropriate transport.
You can go north or south for a wave, south , more people clean water and north explore, like Agnes brown water all the way to Cairns when its looking ok. All an sundry think that the BR stops swell from sneaking into the northern east coast which is bull****, the winter fetch delivers swell another 1000k up the coast. Most people have no clue, cause they believe what they read, so ye the drive north to and past Agnes has waves. not to mention any names of breaks , but it happens. especially on a sup, feet out of the water cause of the animals up there.
As for sth WA , I spent 5 months on the road surfing last year, forget it , it cold and miserable, just like today, HA.

Cheers for the info mate. I'm stuck in Victoria for the rest of this year at least. It sounds easier and cheaper just to leave Oz for a few months over winter and find somewhere to surf and live cheaply. Who knows what's going to happen in Oz with housing and accommodation options, it's crazy. Living in the Socialist Republic of Dan Andrews will definitely not be great.

I grew up on Sydney's northern beaches, lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 25 years and now live on the South West Coast of Victoria. Everywhere has its pros and cons. I love the Sunny Coast ( and all my family still live there) but it gets super crowded a lot of the time and house prices and rent is through the roof!

Victoria is cold but wetsuit technology is amazing and where I live crowds are pretty rare. I love the fact that I get to surf quality waves with only a few people out.
i wish you all the best with your next adventure but as the other posts have said the grass is not always greener although you will be free from Dan which has to be a good thing!

now that i've got your blood pressure up i agree with you and currently away for the winter in the sunny state

It's nice spending the colder months up north and then coming back to the Republic for the warmer months and having bigger surf and spending time with family, but i am torn between the two states, with both having good and bad points, depending on the time of year. It's nice being able to travel between the two and enjoy both.
