Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
Hey gang I have just been diagnosed with this genetic heart disease. I have just turned 60 have surfed my whole life and took up Supping 10year ago. I thought I was losing my fitness as I was getting older. Had an incident out in the surf recently re breathlessness, light headed and lost all my energy. Was going to the gym, playing drums in a band , surfing and walking. Had no idea my Blood Pressure was through the roof. Have been put on BP medication. I am extremely interested if anyone one else has had this condition? Al Gold Coast

Hey AL I've got Afib (Atrial Fibulation) which isn't the same but still heart related. I've had a cyro ablation to sort it as medication wasn't working.

A few lifestyle changes like less caffeine, less alcohol - yeah the fun stuff. Decaffeinated coffee (depresso expresso as my wife calls it) as I like coffee and enjoy the taste and enjoy the odd one but not before exercising. Drink lower alcohol % and lower calorie beer except if going to pub.

Don't redline physically and that's hard will years of working out. Before I had procedure I would have to come in while sup surfing for a rest.
Seriously reduce stress.

At 57 I sound like Mr Sensible and younger versions of myself wouldn't believe I've written the above but enjoy being active.

Sheet I had to google that one. It sounds like a bugger Al. I had a few incidents like you as in when exercising I would get a heavy feeling in my chest and would tire easily which I put down to age. Anyhow, bit of a story and a stent and a triple bypass later and I'm 20 years younger, more energy, more fitness, and I can go as hard as I like and believe me I've tested the surgeons work. But I think that its probably a combination of surgery and diet and lifestyle change that has made the difference. And like 515 says, my younger self wouldn't believe what I'm doing, but I also like to be active and physically fit.

It's certainly a shock to come to terms with, to finally realise your not 10 foot tall and bullet proof anymore. Is there any surgical intervention you can get done that you or your cardio are planning?
