Finally a worthy competitor to the Go Pro..... The Sony Full HD action camera.

From what I can see here are the pros and cons:-

Sony has a Carl Zeiss lens & a CMOS sensor , Steady Shot , Full stereo sound , built in screen and can record 120 frames per second at 1280 x 720 (pretty good) the Go pro is only 848 x 480 at 120fps.

The camera itself is very tough and can handle mud and water , if you want to submerge it it goes in a housing same as the Go Pro. Nothing on battery life , there is only one lens 170 degrees , takes stills , can't see anything on time lapse stills.

The shape I think is good for mounting on boards no pictures of the housing , it will be more bulky than the Go pro but more stream lined and only weighs 3.2 oz.

Here's the best part the price $199 for the non Wi Fi model , $268 with Wi Fi download includes housing and two different types of mounts. US$ from B&H Photo in the states so there will be frieght on top of that , it's availble at B&H end of Sept and around December here in Aus.

For those that buy Sony this is bloody cheap quality camera but it still has to prove itself against the Go Pro.

120 fps at 720p for 300 bucks? ! - That is insaaaane value. You MIGHT need a super fast good quality SD card though for that sort of data throughput

Conform that to 25 p and you have nearly 20% slow motion

Twixtor can EASILY drop that by half -especially if shot under bright light with a fast shutter speed - and probably even a quarter - and the slo motion should be very nearly frame perfect

so you are in the land of 5 to 10 % slow motion .

I'm excited! (and sceptical)

Hopefully Sony are smart enough to throw a high ish bit rate codec at it.

it does look good , released in Dec here - hello santa...
the other thing that Sony manages to do with all the cameras - domestic thru to pro - is ensure that they only run with Sony software.
It also looks like you need sony memory sticks to record on. the sneak peek promo looks sick though...Steady shot addition could be good
What do you do? Buy another little camera or save the coin to buy a new paddle or SUP... Dilemmas...

Dropped into Sony Video pro last night at Robina town centre , got a bit more info. The housing is super sleek , very nice similar mounts to the GoPro .It will now be availble in early October. It does shot the stills same as the go pro 5 sec 10 sec ect for time lapse and takes a standard mini SD card.

The buy in Aus price is $359 for the Wifi model. It's worth paying the extra bucks here in Aus as Sony back up is really good , you don't get that on a grey import ,total weight with housing is just under 200 grams.

The functions on the camera look really user friendly , you won't need Sony software. Bring it on

How good is that can't wait to get my hands on one. Another good point if already own a Sony Camcorder and you shoot with it and the action cam on the same movie your colour balance will be similar so when you cut from clip to clip you won't get the colour saturation difference you do with the Go Pro.

I really like the head band/goggle mount which means you don't have to wear a helmet to mount the cam.

Nice post Camharvey.

yeah there definitely is some goods with it... Sony has had plenty of time to get some go-pro style cameras built, this might be that "game changer".

that housing looks a little shoddy, I lost a camera years ago in one of their "sports housings".

for the size those cameras still bloody amaze me..

Here's another one:-

Sports-Vue 360HD Waterproof Sports Camera

Doesn't have the same slomo capability but still full HD
Frame Rate: 1920x1080p (30fps), 1440x180 (30fps), 1280x720p (30fps), 848x480 (60fps) (not good)

But great lowlight performance , comes with heaps of goodies including head strap & 2 battery's , swivel mount lens & remote control plus it doesn't need a housing. No Wifi but similar money.

Check out these 3 videos , click on the link above and below of the video to see all 3 videos.

Looks great,

When you get one Rob let us know how well it goes with fogging!

Down south in the colder water fogging is a serious concern with the NoGO $%$#@
