Eddie turned 73 a few months ago he starts work early to do a job most half his age would not be capable I'm lucky to share a grandson with him Ryker Gavin arrived the middle of last year and is growing fast ,it will not be long before he's on a board

Towball might know him......I only know the really early morning surfers and there is only about half a dozen of them......and a lot of those people in the vid look incredibly old....I was born in 51 so was too juvenile to really experience the 60s

Was especially stoked to see one of my old uni buddies pushing his daughter into a wave at 19.19.


The vid itself is cool in its own right, but seeing a mate pop up is also pretty awesome

We are a small and self elected group.....often with wetsuits already on....and often at town beach coz that's the cleanest when the surf is big up the coast.....waiting till its light enough to paddle out (or even not waiting but just paddling out anyway lol)

Excellent story there. My life as a surfer has been for the most part an individual endeavor.
Being part of such a surf community is obviously much richer. Doesn't hurt if the local break
serves up such quality goods.

yes he's been here over Christmas may have gone back now I have surfed with him a bit Think the name is Peerless

hey guys was in gisbon in the early 70's on a surfing trip around NZ...had great waves in that area...one of our mates stayed there and i believe is still there..his name is guy midford ..say hi if you see him..

Yep did see him in the surf....didn't talk to him......someone said he was working as a "security consultant" or something in the arab countries....so didn't drop in on him lol
Actually its Towball's friend Mark who knows absolutely everyone in the giz surf world......worked at Blitz surf shop for years and years. You can hardly get him to put his wetsuit on sometimes.....too busy talking to people

I had an unfortunate incident with a campervan, ie paddled out at Red Bus and realised that I had left the keys in, two mates and I.
He saw me at the van (this was when I was surfing) and asked if I needed to get into it right then, said no, had the best surf in ages,
against a full moon backdrop - incredible evening, eventually got into the car, after driving with him to his house to call a lock smith,
gave me his car to drive back, pick up my mates.

Drove back to his house, had a hot shower and some food and then stayed with him for several days, absolutely great guy, and family.
I was working in Wellington at the time, found out he was an ex cop. ex SAS, and as mentioned a security consultant for the UN.

Humbled indeed. (I was a little worried being in a car with him heading to who knows where).

Showed us his MANY surfboards and many surfing stories from places that he has worked OS.

One man I was privileged to meet.

Even tho I'm an Aussie that vid brought so many memories of my misbegotton surfing youth.

Eggs were a very important part of growing up on the northern beaches of Sydney.

Petrol at 18 cents a gallon.
