Approx 6 months ago we had a fairly reasonable day at our local .....sand break ...but enough to demand a little respect on a normal short surfboard and more than a match for most SUP riders.....
After exiting the water and coming to the car park i saw 2 guys in a fairly high priced 4wd rock up and unload their sups and proceed to paddle out ...but left to go and get some grits before seeing any further ....
Upon returning a few of the local boys were chuckling about the carnage that had ensued ..one guy needed to be rescued and the other managed to convert an 8"10 sunova speed into 3 handy pool paddle swim aids .....
The rub being is that after removing the fins and even the fcs screws.....F*cknuckle left the pieces on the grass ....albeit next to the bin ....nose snapped off ...mid section snapped and back third with a major delamination from the break to just before the fins ..
and rode off into the never to be engaged 4WD BMW sunset without nary a care about picking up and disposing correctly of his rubbish ..
Being the self appointed rubbish nazi....i retrieved it and thought i would take it to the local recycle /dump next time i had a clean..up
Long story short ..one of the local guys said... as i was loading it into the boot of my high spec 92 hyundai Lantra .."no point even trying to fix that ..".

i am not a SUP rider although i am like to think ii am fairly unjudgemental ........and don't discriminate ..
i pretty well dislike everyone in the water ....SUPs longboards goat boats bodyboards shortboards

hmmm ...sat in the garage for a few months ...
and then as they say ...hey presto (several hundred times )
the thought of splashing down over 2K certainly would never strike me so i have ended up with the not quite free sunova .
...so for the cost of 4 litres of epoxy and hardener some cloth.. numerous trips to bunnings ..a$65 deck grip (rough total bit under $300)
and a few posca pens to cover my mistakes SUNOVA speed 8075 is recycled and i have something to paddle in the river
Point being ..whoever the gucci loafer wearing , soy and walnut decafe latte drinking BMW ?lexus ?F8cknuckle was from the central coast I am assuming (ECS boardstore)
pick up your Sh8t especially when you are visiting somewhere ...
(sorry about the upside down pics ..........then again WGAF)

Nice recycling job. Must have been a hell of a wipeout, them boards are pretty tough.
To the victor goes the spoils.

Great job!
I'm a rubbish fanatic, good to see what you've done.
And their loss, not that they will ever realise it.

Ha!
Thats a great story.

Have you ridden it yet? And has it folded?
Interested to know about the joins, did you put any stringers in to mate the two sections together?

Yep have had a few new boards snap on the smallest of days out the front. Look at the other side the guy has got to be a bit over it, snapping a 2000 dollar board out in small beachies, so at least he tried to place the rubbish near the bin, Also if he took it with him youd have no board.
I've seen grown man cry when they rush down to the beach holding a new stick, with stickers and leash tag still attached, first clean wax rub and snap goes the nose on a mini 1-2ft beach break. Those short boards only cost 700ish too.

Couple of minor technical things i learned from the experience as epoxy is a different kettle of fish to polyester resin .

~ i used dowell rods inside the foam not so much to add strength as to make it easier to position the pieces while taping in place ,quite a handful by yourself ,much easier to get someone to give you hand, one taping one holding ...I would like to have replaced the carbon wrap on the rails but in the true spirit of a tightarse i tried to keep the cost as minimal as i could..and once you epoxy the join it is amazingly strong

~ the only way to go with epoxy mixing ratios is to buy a $10 kitchen scale from target or big w....essential requirement

~When joining or filling any void/hole in foam with epoxy the best thing is brush a thin coat over the foam first and let it set
any hole deeper than 10mm will generate enough heat to rival chernobyl ....yes epoxy does get very hot as there is a direct relationship to
the surface area it is spread over or not spread over to dissipate heat from the curing, so voids and holes are best done in layers of less than
10mm over the already coated foam ..no drama when glassing a large area as the heat can escape

~ Epoxy can find an escape through tape better than Harry Houdini ..tape as accurate as you can and then retape ...and retape again..the more
accurate your taping the less sanding and epoxy is a bitch to sand ....

~ The sunova are vacuum bagged and the balsa laminate is approx 1.5mm thick ...thought about building a vacuum bagger for the process and some kind soul has put an excellent tutorial here on seabreeze about how to make one from an old fridge motor ...but didn't get around to it www.seabreeze.com.au/News/Windsurfing/How-to-build-your-own-vacuum-pump-for-under-50_1293413.aspx

~ Ozito $49 sanders from Bunnings rule..no need to wreck your $300 makita on a recycle job

~ I found it was cheaper to pick up some epoxy than order it ...nearly $90 delivery charge for dangerous goods ....Trojan composites in Cardiff $180 for 4 litres of epoxy and 1 litre of curing mix .....8M of 6oz cloth a 1m wide .......visited my mum while in Newy and made the detour still cheaper than delivery to my home and everyone was happy

~ Epoxy is a fair bit less toxic fume wise as well and doesn't go off as quickly as polyester in standard form ..good for hacks like me when glassing

See you kooks on the river ...ciao
PS when listening to teenage dirtbag ..substitute middle-aged sweatbag..works for me
