That whole area is a Café for Great Whites, I had many of solo surfs growing up there as a kid "but it would do your head in thinking about it" it was so uncrowded back then the waves would be just perfect around Catherine Hill Bay, Mooney, Ghosties. Swansea Channel and Caves Beach.

My family is from Belmont I lived at Caves Beach Road Caves Beach

You should have seen the waves between Redhead and Blacksmiths before the Jewels Sand Mining f@#@d it, it was as good as or better that the beach breaks you'd see in France "fun times with just you and your mate"

Seems that we may have been neighbours for some time. I spent 20 years in Macquarie Grove...

It was fires on the beach for me - was still at school till '85 but could hear who was playing from my bedroom window at the pub. Late '80s, saw the Workers, RSL & others relieve me of plenty of money...

I had to laugh when they moved the caves beach swim that way after they had concerns about sharks in the lake! Also we had that shark bite the windsurfers board earlier this year.. www.newcastleherald.com.au/story/3709568/windsurfer-escapes-shark/

Have you been out to mooney lately - I went a few months ago, development going on there now which is a shame. I'd consider a property there though, still plenty of uncrowded spots around the area :)

Mooney I've had that place pumping for years surfed the most perfect V-Shaped bank I have ever seen, all to myself. My mate John Stewart (Stewart surfboard) lived in the only house on Mooney beach till it was condemned in the early 80's John Steward is now RIP at Catho Cemetery. Died young 49 of a heart attack surfing (pulling to many Cones)

Yes you would not build or buy a house around that area, it be the full Sink Hole Division, it's just a full Rabbit Warren from all the Coal mining.

Yep I have some great memories of Mooney and Ghosties, I was just in the garage and a shark alert from the 'Dorsal' app came through for frenchies.. that stretch has been getting some publicity lately.www.dorsalwatch.com/

Yeah you guys were always seen as hardcore surfers around the catho way, i was born up at lake munmora with my old man doing the shifts at the power station. I was lucky to score some waves although caves was always considered super sharky. i think the sharks have always been there they just had a lot more food about. I actually think they were eating the smaller sharks and now they have been fished out for flake.
How funny was paddling out back in the day, you would think nothing of sitting on the point for hours, I surfed mid north coast for 15 years daily three times a day all year and only saw one tiny shark and a dead roo floating upside down. Up around seal rocks their must have been hundreds of great whites swim past. I always felt safe and a little wary, at the tuncurry breakwall in a good swell and the water goes brown from the lake then i did feel a little bit like a shark entree, never ever saw one but.

My mate Peter Sanderson was the Manager at lake Mumnmora Power Station, I was talking with his brother Ian this morning That great White was out front of Crabs Creek Lefts when that was going down, there was a bodyboarding paddling out to the Island.

Crabs Creek Left is fickel you need a big NE Swell with NW winds and a incoming tide I've only surfed it about 6 time in all my years there, but it was Pumping. How heavy is Crabs Creek Right it's like Sunset I owned a 7'10'' gun for that was it's, scary.

In 1978 I got the Tuncurry Breakwall Pumping 6ft with only 3 of us out, I've surfed every break around that area one mile and Boomerang are my favourite,

My best mate Johnny Larder owns a house over looking Crabs Creek.

Downwinder I think my dad was friends with his other brother, I loved growing up in the water and surfing soldiers, must say always felt super safe there, like I would be able to see the shark coming, I have been lucky enough to surf the mid north coast for the last 15 odd years, I used to surf boomerang with only a handful of guys out and one epic session with matt hoy old man, it was like ridiculously big. The next day boomer was too big to ride and we hit the breakwall, 6 foot and tubing backwards towards the breakwall as well as those long right shoulders. Three days of perfect tuncurry and cant say I have had it that good. It was in september 95 or 96. Just count myself lucky to have scored perfect waves at the breakwall, boomer, celito and Elizabeth. When I was up there in the 90s and naughties if it crowded with more than three guys you would just move onto the next peak.
