I have finished my finless sabbatical. It took me twelve months to get comfortable surfing without fins. It was quite comical and very humbling but in the end I was enjoying going faster than I have ever been on a surfboard while completely sideways!
I must admit however that my first carving turn with my fin back in felt Really Good!

So do I. I like them even more now. But I learned a lot about turning, rail shape, balance and persistence.

When you remove yourself from your comfort zone, struggle and come out the other end with new skills, it feels pretty good.

Can't you imagine paddle as a flying fin hanging to your arm instead of having it underneath your ankle

I would have readily chipped in to buy you some fins! All those good waves you wasted without proper control

Proper Control is over rated.
