Hi all,

I'm new here, and to SUP. Been kayaking for a few years and have now caught the SUP bug (after buying my wife one, and then deciding I needed to get one too!).

As a bit of a DIYer, I am making a CLC Boats 14' Kaholo SUP. I mainly plan on paddlings bays and rivers, rather than surfing, and intend to race once I get the hang of it (I live in Melbourne so am joining SUPVIC and plan to get into the summer raes soon).

One problem with the Kaholo is that it is supposed to have 2 small fins. Other buiders have generally installed a large centre fin to aid tracking.

Is anyone able to offer advice on suitable fin types/setups, with racing in mind, or point me in a direction where I can find out more - I plan to put in a fin box so happy to experiment with sizes and positioning.

For reference have a look at ones currently in other race boards and copy the distance from the tail. You can buy a finbox from "'Shapers" on the Gold Coast, also a leash plug while you are there, and just buy a fin from your local SUP Shop. I think as long as as the fin doesn't extend past the tail of the board, it will track well enough.
Most people favour the larger dolphin surfboard shape, though the "axe" shape apparently works well.

IMO the hatchet style fin is the go for flat water and racing sup, they even work well in surfing SUPs. Most fin companies have a hatchet fin but call it something like Axe, Hatchet or Keel and they might vary in shape but barely. Jamie Mitchell has a nice on in carbon and is really light. If you dont care about weight then a fibreglass is heaps cheaper.

I think the only good thing about the three small fins in when paddling in shallow water.

I agree that a fin like that JM fin is the best way to go.. See you on the water..

depends if you like a stiff board or a loose board? big fin eqauals stiff where small equals loose. if you starting out use stiff fins because a loose board will do your head in and when you advance slowly reduce your fins size for more fun in the future.

Hey Josh 808, where did you get that fin from in the bottom picture? Love the design and colour. I had one similar ages ago and it went like a ballterror on my SUP and Mal. It was a big 10 inch fin and it was the best of both worlds, turned on a dime and stable for nose riding.

thats one of the nicest looking boards Ive ever seen...Period!

Mac, are those axe type fins more for your traditional nose riding, when on a mal?

Yes Husq its for a log style mal,gives a heap of hold while your up the nose and drive down the line,however it does add some stiffness to your turns so you have to draw them out.Its my super small day choice @ 908 x 23 1/4 x 3 1/4 ,it catches anything.

Glad you like the tint (sunset) colours.

I'll bring you over a pipe fin in march

Thanks all for the replies.

I'll get down to the local SUP shops over the next few weeks and check out fins. Will go for the hatchet style, single large fin for this board - I plan to stick to cruising and racing for now, and will eventually make something smaller for the surf.

JT - Will post pics when I get it going (have just scarfed the sheets together) - I am planning to do a bamboo veneer on the deck which should look pretty cool (IMO). Will be ordering parts from Shapers, including their vents instead of using the CLC setup.

Getting cut tomorrow, I'm doing the lot myself on this one, glassing, sanding etc. I've shaped a few but this is the first glass job ever. If I was a real man I would have shaped it with a planer as well.

It's called the 'Multi Grip' a board you can leave in your car to ride in everything from 1 foot poo to 5 foot points. Even painting it green so it doesn't go brown in the van.

Set up as 2 + 1, modern single fin outline. I AM FROTHING!

It is a pig and I am proud....... After learning how to turn the grand pigs like these fellas talk about on this forum this is a toothpick. It is a lot bigger than my normal 6'1 or 6'2 though....
