Looking for advice on fin set up 8' flow. Have only ridden it 3 times in waste to head high weak waves. As per the blog on Sunova's web site it's a step down from my Speeed in summer but I'm thinking it's another expanse mistake. I have experimented as a twin fin, twin fin and trailer (MR fins) and thruster, but all loose the tail on the bottom and top turns. Not all the time but most and when you really don't want it to. Makes you look like a Kook and loose your respect in the line up. Found the quad as the best for drive and speed using the standard 94-83 fines it came with but they still allow the board to slide. Are these boards built to side and not get the direct drive I'm so use to after three Speeds and a Creeek. Been out of the water for nearly a month with Covid isolation, work commitments or the Surfs been flat. Thinking of just cutting my losses and sticking with the 8'2 Speeed. Any recommendations to keep the fins in the water? thanks

Don't give up on the flow ,it's a really high performance board and very very different to speeds and creeks ,and yes finding the right fin combo took me a while too but as my previous flows it is best for me as a quad ,the tail is wide so having the fins on the rail is better .I can still slide mine out a bit with this combo ,but most times it is good .if it's choppy and messy I will put slightly bigger rears on to give it drive ,but these are shaper 2" on the rears and 7's on the front .but FCS 7 fronts and 2 rears also work well on the flow ,mine is a 8'8 black custom ,but I'm 96 kgs and it's a great board ..I like it better in medium size waves ..really good speed and comes out of the turns with a crazy speed and looseness and great recovery for the next move ,it's taken me a while to get it dialed in ,it really is different to all my other Sunova's ,and no you haven't wasted your money ..stay on the tail .

O2.. I agree with Tardy. Its an awesome board Im 96kegs and have the 8'8. Run it with quobba quads at the moment and find this is almost perfect for me, especially if there is a little more juice. As tardy said get on the tail and the awesomeness begins...

Yesterday's setup. Overhead and a half, fat wally beachies, full tide. So much speed. Almost too much for this gorilla. I was definitely out of control on a couple of waves.


Today's set up. Half tide, point break sitting out wide, half to head high. Love this set up, fins from my old Deep JC board, which was a very similar shape. I was carving, more controlled, less hectic, more fun. Which was good cause there was sooooooooo many punters


And ditto. Get back on that tail, she'll light right up

And for tomorrow, I'm gonna go back to my ol' favourites as a quad, and see how she sticks on some walls when I kick her in the tail

The good thing about this set up is, if I'm not feelin' it, I can flick out the rears and just put one in the centre for some loosey gooseness.


I'll report back when I'm done......

Ok thanks all for the info. NE swell is about to come down the coast so hopefully I'll have a few surfs to experiment.
Still can't go past the speeed as a one quiver board.

I TRIED that red fin quad combo brenno ,was too much fin for me ...might work with 2 smaller rears ,i found two much fin on the flow turns it into a bullet ..too much speed and not enough loose .it is a fast board

You might be right mate, but the one thing it has done for me is forced my driving foot further back, to unlock the potential of this board. Loving it. The refinements made to this version make V01 and V02 chalk and cheese IMHO. I'm still sold on the quads for this board. My fat ar5e and the flow's fat ar5e deem it necessary. Tomorrow I'll trim the fins a bit and surf this combo......

Sweet mate ,I also love the quads ..and love the flow rocker ..you know this rocker is very similar to the acid ,the acid has a tad more nose kick .it really is my favorite board of all time this flow ..it's taken some getting use to the rails .You just have to lift you game and work on your balance ..with it ,but the rewards are huge ..speed and looseness is its stand out features ,as well as cutting the face of the wave with the thin rails .

Im with you tardy, this is the best board I have owned....the rails are awesome however you can get caught out every now and then with the stepped rail. Although this could be due to my aged and bulky body!! A 2 hour + session in chop can get very taxing on the calves..Im wondering if the next size up may be worth a look at for those really choppy days ??? ( I have the 8'8 at 96kegs)

I weighed in at 103 kegs this morning (yikes) and wouldn't go any bigger than the 8'8". Just my preference. I like how the water covers the thin rails up to the deck while I'm paddling around. For me this is the key to the stability of this board. I got some great beachies this morning, including 1 big bomb that blew my beard back. I find with this board I'm standing more to the rear of the handle to get the forward portion of the rails up and out of the way for the drop. It's a small adjustment but has helped me heaps I'm getting more game on this thing, it rips

I reckon the next size has gone too big. 9 foot x 142.7 liters x321/4 wide .. ? Might be just me ,but I"m getting a 127 liter 31. 1/8 x 8'10 insane to fill my gap .need a pin tail for the quiver , but acid rocker .

The only fin setup that has excited me on my 9'0 Flow V2 is smallish C-Drive sides and a very small "J-drive" trailer (3.6")
All of a sudden it loosened up and got fun.

Thanks all,
bought a set of C drive quads and thrusters, didn't like them. Put them in my speed to try and make a comparison to what I know. And still didn't like them. Ordered a set of Quobba fins waiting on delivery. In the mean time, I have found that an old set of copy H2 fines work well as a quad so I may have spent too much on fines when I had these old cheap copy fins in my shed all along. cheers

C Drive have a lot of drive, and in the rear it can stiffen too much SUPs, because SUPs are much more stiff than surfboard to begin with, because of their size.
I liked my C Drive on short SUPs (less than 7'6"), to help master the row effect, but I found them too stiff for longer boards.

Just try only C drive in the front, but frankly you will forget the C Drive once your Quobba are there.

what makes the quobba so good?
I know they have a wide base along the length of the fin and a small wing in the side. I'm assuming it reduces the drag in the water. Im a short, fat and old back foot surfer riding boards 7:11, 8:0 and 8:2 ranging from 96L to103L at @84kg. I like MR twin fins with a small trailer but tend to break the front fins at the pegs other time. Not sure if it's from pressure on the fines or leg ropes pulling them being large more leverage. what would you suggest? Fin selection is doing my head in.??

The Quobba fin design (wide sloped base + winglet) induce an horizontal vortex along the base. Water thus can go past the fin with less resistance than normally. Less resistance means less drag, and also more hold, as the water relative speed to the fin is greater.

The Quobba founder realized that most of the fin drag comes from the base, not from the tip.



This is related to the kind of phenomenon that you can try yourself by creating a vortex to empty a water bottle faster. (And it is nice to see a Russian play with bottles rather than tanks...)



As a (French) student I even saw this technique used - by the son of a wine maker - in drinking contests to see who could drink a full bottle of wine the fastest!Here is a tutorial with a beer, for you Aussies :-)



As for fins suggestion. I can offer you what I did: Once I experienced the Quobba speed gain, I'd say about 5% in the top speed range, I just adapted my surfing to capitalize on the speed: always trying to keep as much speed a possible, avoiding for example turning too early without having built speed first, and getting stuck in the lip. With normal fins, it may not seem worth the trouble, as you may end often stuck in the lip anyways. With the Quobba, it is easier to reap the rewards of trying to surf faster. The Quobba will not magically put a motor in your board, but they will reward more your commitment to speed.
