I have a JP 10' x 33.5" and find it a bit big now. I still want to keep it, but for perfect days and waist to shoulder hi waves (my limit) soemthing smaller would be nice. But not a pure wave hardcore board. easier to paddle with a bit less width would be nice too. Old Starboard 9' x 30" is a smidge small, I can only paddle it on dead flat water.

So I am thinking about making a board. I have a shape3D file for a board that looks the goods, wondering if any smart types here can have a look at it and let me know what they think of the shape?

I am very basic in waves, so this is my first 'step down' board. Thus I don't want it to be too wavey, but I don't want it to be a pig that won't turn also.
On the other hand I find the width of the JP makes it hard to paddle, I paddle 3x as hard as others just to catch a wave, I can't believe I see them doing 3 strokes and they are on, whereas I paddle like crazy for 10sec prior and barely get it.

If I am going to invest the time and money to make one I want it to be right. I can't demo boards and then copy a good one, so I need to know what I am getting. I know windsurf shapes inside and out, not SUP. This is a shape3D file from another person, that I then widened.


An expert SUP shaper would look at the file and immediately tell me if it is real wavey, an easy paddler, or be able to say "it will feel exactly like a XXX 9x32 but be more turny" etc etc.

Now who says what I shape wont be perfect? Maybe it will be done by a mate with CNC.....

It's probably a bit early to start designing your own boards , probably better off and sitting down with a shaper and get a full custom .No one ever gets it right first go and you are left with something you can't sell.

Have you had a look at the bigger boards in the JP Surf range :- 9-6 x 31-148 litre or 9-2 x 30-136 litre. They might be just what you are looking for dropping down for the 10-0

Mark, See if you can demo a Tabou SUPASURF 9'0x31.5". @145L they surf really nice and are very stable in all but super windy conditions.

Yes, and I would add: try to find a shaper that have a similar body height/weight than you, and SUP-surfs the way you would like to surf (longboard or shortboard style? carving? tricks?)
While in theory, a good shaper could design a board for all rider sizes, in practice you will find that people that are the most satisfied of the work of a shaper tend to be of s similar body size...

Just go for it and don't worry to much you would be surprised at what things surf fine. If you know how a windsurf board works although its not a surf board I'm sure with looking at a few sup you won't be a mile off and you will learn a lot more by refining your own shapes than trying to understand others and in turn end up with exactly what you like, the most important thing is probably getting the fins right but thats not too hard and easy to change if really needed.

I wouldn't want to change your design but I'm more than happy give some advice and to take a look at the file for you if you would like to cheque it over to make sure there are no mistakes as i use it here every day and run my cnc on it.

I did not design it. Further the whole intent of this is to save money, not pay somebody $1500 and I am perfectly capable of building one. Also, like I said I can't really demo any.

However a shared design on Shape3D, 9'6" x 30 that I then widened to 32" and changed nothing else may now be a dog. I don't know how much rocker is used on a pure wave vs an allrounder.

I really expected somebody to put their hand up to have a quick look and advise me and they get a free file emailed to them.

As in, put the file pics on here for us to see. Somebody would then be able to give you advice.

alternately look at a whopper n scale down.
oh and 1500 for a custom, tell me where sounds cheap!

bit confused about what is massive...? a 9'6"x32 is massive?

Just take a few screen shots and then upload the image straight on to here.

Kami is the guy I was thinking of. He's posted file pics on here before with enough detail to see what's going on. Still like one he did called The Twizler

Thank's all for feed back about designing board. I all ready spend few thousands hours on S3D program which is still in improvement and so I'm glad to share the benefit of my designing's experience with others.
As Bob from San Diego, He and his mate look so happy of the board we build together far away of each other

Piros , about editing video on Mac , you have to use Quick time player and record your screen . It's pretty short and simple maneuver .
Zeus, glad you remember about TWINZER , I still reckon this is the perfect fin system for SUP
