I had one for a while as a demo and found the board hard to drive into turns due to the wide tail.
It takes a little adjusting to ride them in a traditional manner.
However very fast down the line.

Being a shameless & well connected Sunova PIMP, I will jump in with some thoughts:

Please take it for what it is.. at 68, I am not the young ripper that Casso is.

The Shroom is a very "condition specific" board
Built for super stability and performance in small or mushy waves.

The Shroom is a very fast board, for it's squat little body. However, speed defines how it will turn.
A slower speeds, the Shroom is a ripper, as Casso showed.. it loves those smaller, frumpy conditions. That is where it excels.

I have ridden my 8'3 Shroom in OH waves to test it..and while it was very fast, I really had to scrub off speed before laying into a turn. Not surprising, since that is not it's intended purpose.

My favorite conditions for this board so far, is small clean peelers. It is so snappy and carvey at those speeds.. a very fun board in soft waves.

Heres a short vid of my ideal Shroom conditions.. notice how easily it turns at these low speeds.

If one were to rank the different sunova wave shapes according to how early they can catch a fat wave,

Can you assign a score for these from 1 to 5?

Search 12'
The One
Skate
Style
Speed
????Shroom (just how much later does one have to be to catch a wave with this one?)

Ditto! Awesome question and list I'm guessing the order assuming mid-range for the unknown lengths:

Style, The One, Search 12', Speed, Flow, Skate, Acid, Shroom.

It has a lot to do with length though, so whilst a good giggle at being a graded list, we need to factor in length. Also, conditions.

There are some great vids coming out of the AussiePaddlesurfer camp, please keep them coming, they're great to watch and learn from.

Sorry billieKrub and baddog I didn't see this question till now

First off, since this is a Shroom thread... they catch waves without effort.
Wide nose and tail... nice rocker, they just seem to pick up anything.

1 being hardest
5 being easiest

Search 12' = 2 --- never tried one, but I have a 14' Search and have surfed it 2 time very briefly. You need to get 14' moving, so longer = more paddling than short wide boards IMO

The One = 4 - easy paddler, wideish tail, flatish rocker
Skate = 5 - wide tail, flat rocker, wide overall
Style = 3 - narrow, low volume, sits down in the water, narrow tail
Speeed = 4 - great nose for paddling hard, parallel rails, good hips
Shroom = 5 - wide tail, wide nose with thickness on each end for lift.... easy peezy
Flow = 4.5 - Wide at hips, flat rocker at hips, really surprising how easily it picks up waves, then instant acceleration.
Acid = 3 - good paddler, more rocker, narrow tail so pretty easy, but more work than others

Thanks for the insight, STC. Had assumed a shroom would be slow to paddle and require a later takeoff--you indicate the opposite, based on actual experience. It may be slower but does OK without as much momentum, apparently.

Videos show the shroom, ridden by those who can move that rear foot well, turns very well in small stuff, requires very little wave to get going and offers stability for those of us who need it. With the caveat to use another shape in larger and steeper surf, where it can lose its agility at high speed.

Its competitors, other short and wide and fast shapes have similar application, available from most sup mfrs. The Shroom has the Sunova construction and more stability, a WSurf mast track(let), the option to customize, and a lot of product support by you and others. The lift handle is fine unless using mittens in winter. Your reports suggest that the Shroom surfs better due to B. Burger's ability to improve on the competitive offerings. It would be great to have Subboarder Magazine do a review, as it has done for the Speeed, Style, JP, Naish, etc. They are positive and open minded in their approach and non threatening to a Mfr.--even for a strange shape!

From a stability point of view, what size Shroom equates to a Skate 8/10 or Speed 9/2?
