Ok so how much training should you be doing each week to comfortably compete in distance paddles? (around 20km). Ive been SUP surfing for a couple of years now around 3 times a week and have been on a 14 foot board doing some distance paddling for the last few months and am starting to think about entering some races around the place and wondering what sort of km guys are paddling each week. I'm 37 years old and would say i'm quite fit having played sport all my life with some being semi professionally but only paddling/surfing for the past 2/3 years. I've been doing some 4 km timed paddles in the river and ocean with my times coming in around 27-29 mins depending on the tides and conditions and going up wind/tide 2km and then back with it home....Im keen to start to do longer paddles and more often but just keen to see how much guys out there are doing, cheers Loz.....
We try to do one LSP a week, that is usually around 10k and I do one of the marathon series a year, and that is like 13k and frankly I hit the wall right about there. We have one guy down here that does the Murray Marathon alone each year and that is like 12 hours each day.
I can think of nothing worse than doing a 20k flatwater paddle
As a casual racer I do a 4k flat water every Thursday flat chat a hour of ins and outs (takes about 3 to 5 minutes hard sprinting to get out the rest about a minute and try catch a few bumps back in on the ocean on a Wednesday and any surf I can get up to 3 hour sessions if it's good every day If I could ( hasn't happened for at least 6 months) and I might do a Ocean or river paddle at a casual pace of around 10k just because I like to paddle but I do know the serious guys do 2 sessions a day not sure of the intensity or the drills but they are a pretty hard core few
