M20 just got more interesting. Will a dug out be better in those conditions than the SIC or the NSP shapes

WOW
They look great, what weapons.
I want one.
I have paddled dug outs for years though, many just wouldn't feel right on in one of those though.

they look great. I rekon dugouts are the go ,they may look like canoes but I think they allow for a less stable but faster bottom shape. The guys that ride them regularly would know best , from my limited experience I would think they would save your legs from getting tired from constant balance correction? I know myself from long paddles its my legs that go first.

The main issues with dugouts in big and wild conditions aren't about performance at all IMO. They are the added difficulty of getting back in them in heavy seas and big winds, and the extra risk of injury during wipeouts. Most of us who have dugouts have clattered ourselves at one time or another on the sidewalls. For me it always seems to be my shins. You kinda have to make sure you eject yourself from a dugout as you wipeout, which makes quick and undramatic dunkings less likely. There is also the issue of water in the footwells, and issues to do with strength in big waves/shorebreaks etc. I suspect that it is these things that have tended to prevent full-on dugouts being a regular proposition for the masses. But if you've got crazy skills and it's a sponsor's board then I guess they don't matter so much. Very bold, very interesting.

I heard that they're for the M2O only and the guys aren't using them for the Maui to Molokai. They look amazing though! Marcus knows his stuff!

Tightlines you are a smart man. They are the 3 riders.
Yes the boards have been designed for M2O as the boys have sic boards for the proper downwind races although Tobys is a little different because at this stage he hasn't got an sic so he's is a bit more of an all rounder but with main focus on M2O. I guess that's the beauty of a custom.
I will be doing an all out 18x23 downwind dugout with a very different shape for the Perth summer so it will be interesting so see how that goes.
As Area10 pointed out the dugout isn't for everyone and we have a flat deck design ready to go!
You gotta hand it to Simon and the DEEP crew and the boys (James, Toby and Matt) who have chosen to try something that hasn't really been done.
I can't wait to get mine built and over here in some bumps, and who knows, maybe it will be slow, but maybe it will be stupid fast!!! There's only one way to find out!!

Stoked for you Marcus, you've goto have a go, your boards look magic. Just like my LOW PRESSURE board it was a gamble and paid off, stoked. Simon is onto it he has a very good eye to detail but I did stand over Simon while he was shaping LOW PRESSURE in a good way and didn't I got a few bad-vibe heckles from guys like Al hunt "to funny" people will mock you for having a go.

If the M20 condition are anything like last year your board will smash'm. I leave tonight for 8 weeks of Maliko bliss can't wait already Maliko has been on fire the last 2 weeks.

Anyway I'll see ya in December Marcus for some WA Downwind fun.

That's an interesting one really.
I can't remember ever saying anything or commenting on the Low Pressure board...
However knowing Marcus, and having paddled with the boys when they came from Sydney to try the 1st dugout they made, I can totally understand why they want to have a crack on it at molokai.
And as Kissa is saying, wouldn't be surprised to see one of those guys on the podium!
