Been some big long period waves hitting the West Coast.

How many people SUP at Raglan? I have heard that only a few surf there and are probably locals like DK? This photo was taken at Raglan a few years ago! https://www.instagram.com/p/LE1rmIBrq3/

They made a decent effort on the sign though.

I suspect you can call Raglan a suburb of Auckland as far as surfing goes......and its only a skip and a hop from Hamilton.
Probably not many volunteers to paddle out and catch a wave in that much juice though.
Compared to Gisborne its like big city surfing

Wash out your mouth Gizzie - sadly there are too many Jaffas surfing there. Been surfing at Raglan on and off since the late 60's, (I'm from Hamilton). You can get away with riding a SUP at Manu Bay or the beach, but unless you're Daniel Kereopa or Hawk don't even think about Indicators. Raglan is a wave machine, unfortunately it's on the International surf tourism circuit, too close to Auckland and the Bay of Plenty - so when the East Coast is flat -guess where they come. It can get uber crowded
There are still waves to be caught if you know where and when to go and Indicators on a good day a fantastic wave to watch, I'm glad to have surfed it when I was younger and the crowds weren't so bad.

Never surfed indicators......done Manu Bay a few times but probably back when I was a knee boarder
Happy to stick to Gisborne waves.....Wainui a couple of days ago

Hope you are not so ancient as to be a bit of a nearly extinct dinosaur as far as your perception of how stand ups fit into current surf culture?

Had the pleasure of surfing indies with the local crew back in the late '80's early 90's as a teen. Now living in nsw but not a day goes by without thinking about some epic dawnies at the point and indies. We use to sneak past good ol' Kereopa with his shotgun (no bolt though :), climb under the barbed wire fence, and run down to the lagoon for the paddle out.....paddle over and literally sit in line with the crew catching some heavy rides. miss the bro's

Don't know what he had done to earn the privilege.....but one of my housetruck acquaintances used to live on the access property.....so didn't have to risk the shotgun thing

Spent a few nights parked up in mobiles at Manu Bay before they fenced things off (was about the time they had music festival at the marae)

Maybe about this time.....Moana and the moa hunters were definitely there (and me too)

Welcome to Raglan!

Hey Gizzie, we would have had a few surfs together I'm sure!! I spent many a night sleeping in a golden holden around this time at the point, or up in an old bus stuck on the hill. The good old days live on.... getting keen to hit the road back home again (been a few years). Good news, it's saturday tomorrow and there is suppose to be a wave on the way...somewhere:)

things were pretty mellow back then.....was a bit culture shocked a few years back to visit and find fences and stuff. Same with Weld Road in New Plymouth......seemed at the time to be a big open space. Was broken down at the time in my KM Bedford.......had driftwood.....had copper.....had plastic barrel.....had personal spa pool. When went back also fenced in.

Sorry Gizzie been in Taupo fishing till I got flushed out by the rain. Dinosaur to be sure, lived on Makarori beach in a bus one summer about 78 I think when you could camp there free, fantastic time.
The Indicators crowd at Raglan have always been a bit tetchy, you have to earn your waves there for sure.
Manu Bay is much more social although over run by tourists but it is SUP friendly. It was a bit of a hoot on Easter Sunday when the entire Kereopa Whanau turned up at the Point for a family day every wave was a party wave and the poor old tourists didn't know what hit them Daniel was cruising round knee paddling a SUP with his 2 or 3 year old daughter on board.
No I think SUPs are part of the future just like mals, hybrids, boogie boards and what ever else anyone wants to ride as long as they have fun and respect others.
Because my wife is a newbie, I tell her she's my grommit and has to do everything - yeah right, we go over to Waihi quite a bit, mellow little waves and a friendly crowd. I actually spend as much time fly fishing as I do on the SUP these days.
