“Creek to Creek SUP Race”

SUPSA Gold Coast invites you to be involved in the inaugural 2012 “Creek to Creek SUP Race” on
Queensland's Gold Coast.
The Race
This race will see scores of Stand up Paddle athletes contest a Flat to Open Water short distance pursuit in the pristine ocean waters of the Gold Coast.
The start of the race will see competitors be counted down, time handicapped from the unspoilt landscape of the banks of the Currumbin Estuary, then rounding a “buoy” set adjacent to the starting line. Competitors will then set off on an 8 km stretch heading out through the Currumbin Alley (in which ever line they seek) to picturesque Tallebudgera Creek, passing inside beautiful Burleigh
Headland.
Once competitors reach the river mouth of Tallebudgera, they take a line that suits them to navigate down inside the rock groin. Competitors will make their way down this wonderful natural amphitheatre of rain forest and volcanic earth to round the final finishing buoy adjacent to Koala Park.
All competitors must finish between the two dry sand finish flags, flanking the final turning buoy.
Once competitors cross the line, their individual finish time minus their time handicap will determine their “actual time” and category placing.
This race will also see six to seven of the worlds' best paddling athletes battling it out in our own backyard.
Venue
Start – Apex Park, Currumbin Creek (Duringan Street, Currumbin. Next to tennis courts)
Finish – Kevin Gates Park, Tallebudgera (Awoonga Ave, Koala Park. Near boat ramp)
Distance – approximately 8 km's
Competitor Marshalling – 8:30am – 10:00am at Starting Venue
Start Time – 10:30am Sharp
Presentation & BBQ – on completion of all race competitors at Finish Venue

• All competitors will be “counted down” to the start of their respective time handicap.
• Each competitor must finish with their paddles in their hands and in control.
• If a competitor falls from his/her board at any time, no more than 5 “prone paddle strokes” can
be engaged before getting to their feet unless resigning from race.
• Legropes must be worn and attached securely to their craft.
• 12'6” length board must have fixed or removable fin fitted only.

14' Open Men/Women + Seniors Men/Women 40-49 + Masters Men/Women 50 Over

• Each competitor must finish with their paddles in their hands and in control.

Unlimited Open Men/Women + Seniors Men/Women 40-49 + Masters Men/Women 50 Over

• Each competitor must finish with their paddles in their hands and in control.
• If a competitor falls from his/her board at any time, no more than 5 “prone paddle strokes” can
be engaged before getting to their feet unless resigning from race.

• Unlimited length board can have fixed or removable fin or rudder system.
Trophies & Prizes
• Trophies 1st, 2nd & 3rd in each division plus ample random competitor prizes.
Conclusion
• The designated course may be reversed if wind conditions aren't favourable.
• An alternate flat water course may be set if ocean conditions aren't favourable.
• Good sportsmanship is promoted during whole event.
• No Exhibitors and SUP affiliated Brands to be on display or showcasing their products unless
supporting the event.

Anyone would have fun with a camera if there is swell regardless of location, add a sweep to the equation and then we'll see some action

So who is keen for this race? It would be good to see some interstate guys show up for this event

We're basically seeding the competitors. Maybe 20-30 seconds between each person. I have had a look at Swannies Sunny Coast time trial times and can get a jist of where you guys sit. Most of the Goldy crew have done some sort of time trial as such and others are looking to do so. We can seed other paddlers according to where they believe their ability lies.
The race is not necessary first across the line wins. Its based on your individual time minus your handicap.

Creek to Creek SUP Race
*If wind conditions aren't favourable to run from south to north, the course will be reversed seeing Tallebudgera as the starting venue.
*If ocean conditions aren't favourable (deeming the course to be unsafe for competitors) an alternate course will be set, most likely inside the Currumbin Creek entrance or Tallebudgera Creek entrance.
These changes, if applicable will be posted at our earliest convenience!

Going by the last 12 towers race it should be fun Peasey certainly knows how to put on an event this one should be a cracker.

Cant wait will be fun , expecially if there is a bit of swell on

Great shots Piros. I think some of them made the last issue of SUPWorld Magazine.
I must say that SUPSA does have quite a few top "Lensmen" in the club.

The Creek to Creek should be a fun little race leading up to the Queensland State SUP Titles 9,10 & 11 of June. As with the Distance race for the States, the Creek to Creek will have a Flat Water component aswell, taking in Currumbin Creek prior to the creek enterance and Tallebudgera after passing the river mouth. Around 5.5kms of ocean and approx 2.5kms of flat water.

Should be some very quick times with the crew back from Hawaii. The Currumbin crew are hot right now but not to discount the Sunny Coasters of Lincoln "Ironman" Dews and Ryan Keck who are absolutely flying.

As was mentioned, its not the first across the line that wins. Its the paddler with the fastest time. And for the first time racers, this is designed for you guys. Chase down the person in front and try to put distance between you and them.

Should be fun and exciting. Plenty of viewing points between the start and finish lines!

i don't mind going last. as long as you take 1/2 hour off my time

Still a week out but at the moment it looks like there'll be a tiny swell and real light Sth winds. Absolutely perfect conditions for novices and the distance shouldn't trouble anybody. I'd imagine the top guys will be sprinting the whole way.
What's a fast time for 8klms in smooth conditions?
l'll be hoping to do 7 minutes per klm going off my training times. Would Jacko etc be doing 6 minute kilometres? Or even faster? That would make 8 klm in 45 minutes seem do-able.
Just seeing where an average to slow paddler like myself fit's in the handicap system.

Yeah Flounder, conditions look pretty good for the race. It will be interesting to see the times of the Elite guys and girls. Being a staggered start, trying to catch the paddler in front of you will see some very fast times for everyone.
All the guys are back from Hawaii and are absolutely flying. There are quite a few new designs of boards too which is great for all involved to check out what new models are working.
Flounder, I think you will see your times drop considerably with this concept of racing.
Should be a great race and viewing for spectators from start to finish. Tally groin will be a great vantage point!

How good is this W/E looking!!! heaps of people looking forward to a nice fun race, from the looks of the forecast the winds will be light and a small swell so everyone should be able to give it a go!!

Nah i would say that would be the biggest class as most people have 12'6 boards, pretty sure most of the boys from training are going to go 12'6!!
