Thank you for posting this DJ. I found the analogy of pulling yourself on a skateboard past a pole really helpful in understanding the hip movement he is talking about.

Thanks DJ and BPS/Robert for posting and producing the vid. I'm just starting out on my understanding of paddling but I like CB's mention of DC's staggered stance. For the same reason you never see anyone in a tug of war comp in a parallel stance methinks there's a lot of advantage to a staggered foot position. As CB indicates though, everyone's different!

Love this stuff. The sport is always evolving. its not all about brut strength, but about technique, discipline and feel

Good one DJ.
Good to see a young fella has woken up to the folly of bending over. Too many people bend right over to maximise their paddle power - it's got to be terrible for your back and an accident waiting to happen.

Watching his stroke, though, he looks to be going way too high with the top arm on the downstroke (yes I know he's on dry land) which equals shoulder issues above 90 degrees. I've got shoulder bursitis from having too long a paddle in my quest to stay as upright as possible to protect my dodgy back.

And I always enjoy listening to someone who's 20-odd talk about technique when they're made of rubber.....!

Yeah his technique of recent years is not stastainable for a long period at the elite level I always thought he is going to injure his back before he knows it. Compared to some others like danny and travis technique seems far more efficient long term on the body.
Then there is kai that loads his shoulders up getting the top shoulder completey over the top of the bottom and un twists like a preztel as he comes up. Again to my un trained eye it looks like there is far to much pressure on the shoulders.

I am always impressed with the guys that hardly look like they are doing much but they are doing plenty from
The feet into the hips and powering from there.

I try it all and feel and I'm sure look unco with all the techniques

Amazing how paddling technique has changed , I remember when Dave Kalama was saying to reach reach , when you do that with your shoulder it puts the joint in a bad position ive found , and your shouders get sore very quickly especially if you've had previous issues. Its like when you do weights or lifts like deadlifts and chin-ups you need to keep your shoulders tight in the joint and transfer the load to the muscles. A good way ive found that helps is keep a slight bend in the upperarm , and keep your wrist parallel with the paddle shaft , and when your paddle is set think about a boxers jab instead of forcing the paddle down into the water with your shoulder. Changing up your hand positions helps to I rekon , and your feet for that matter. To help stop using the lower back so much by over ending a simple solution is lift your head and look further out in front of the board , you see a lot of people looking down at the nose of their board or at their feet this causes bad balance and a tendency then to overbend. Your body follows where the head goes

A high arm above the shoulder is a nightmare for the Rotator Cuff. Alternate techniques to give the body a time to recover may also be something to consider particularly for those like me above 40. To keep in the sport you need to have a sustainable method
