Toying with the idea of entering but have bad memories of struggling upwind from last year.

Is anyone doing the race this weekend?

Just registered, its either getting out on the board or staying at home helping the wife with the gardening.

The wife will not be happy

I'm fairly new to SUP and didn't know about it but will probably give it a go.

Yes, last year was not fun. Put me off SUP racing for life. I did the kneeling thing to stop being blown backwards.

Maybe the SUPpers should be au contraire, and have their own race from the finish line to the spit.

Forecast looks ok at this stage, fresh easterlies in the morning lighting off out buy late afternoon, should be a downwinder from point walter to the left bank.

What time does it start and can you register on the day?..I go and check the web site for details. I might do it

Conditions look better than last year for sure. My Glide will be there but not me. Working unfortunately out bush.

Nah I'm not, but a good idea. Adam has offered his 12'6 as it might be a little more friendly than the 11'2.

Like you Reagan it is either that or stay at home and considering I haven't picked up a paddle for the last 4 weeks, not even my new one, I will be doing it as long as the forecast stays the same.

Am doing the 12km in a dragon boat. Not experienced enough to do the 4km on my Jimmy Lewis yet !

How did everyone go?
I did it in an oc6 which was fun. We had to paddle from Matilda Bay to the start at the narrows and then had a good run to freo. The hardest bit was jumping out of the boat at Point Walter dragging the boat over the spit and then jumping back in.
Much better conditions than last year

Why stand up when you can paddle sitting down on a comfy seat?
For me, if I'm going to do a stand up race, its either down wind only or I would rather do it in the canoe.

Hey guys any news on how the race went?

Was a great race, mnuch better conditions than last year.

Took some photos which will upload later (nothing special just before and after shots)

Results (to the best of my knowledge)

1) Mike Galvin - Starboard 14 - (guesstimate) - 36 min
2) Forgot his name but the same guy who beat me last year the energiser bunny - Naish 10'6 (yes it was a 10 foot board) - 38 min
3) Me (Zimbo Reagan) - 12'6 Pin - 39 min
4) Guy on 17 Naish (?)
5) (?)
6) Cam - 12'6 Starboard

Great day for it. 10 knot easterly, we were in the lee of it down Blackwall Reach as a crosswind - still some effect, paddling about 8 strokes to 2 on each side.

Mike Galvin popped out early from the start on the 14' Starboard Free Race - extended out to almost 100m by half way.

Middle leg was a direct trail wind with the occassional wash providing a few little runners. The final straight was again in the lee of the Easterly, but more sheltered than Blackwall reach.

Placings (unofficial)
1. Galvin
2. Daylight
2. A guy on a Naish (apparrently a 10'8?) - had great technique, high rating
3. Zimbo Regan - Starboard Pin
4. Guy on a Naish 17' Glide
5. Me on a Naish Glide 12'
6. Cam on a Naish Glide 12'

Sorry I can't be more accurate on the names or further details past 6th - overall I think that there were 12-15 SUPs? We finished the 4km in around 35-40mins.

I'm sure a better informed someone will add to this information. I great day, congrats to all involved - competitors and organisers.

Definately more fun than crawling around under bloody harvesters in the middle of nowhere.

Interesting that they call it a 4km race, measured it on google earth ( which may or may not be accurate ) and the route we were forced to take measures up at 5.9km!!

I'm the guy on the black 12'6" that finished up in 10th.

BTW the Bay2Beach race on the 28/11 also has a SUP division this year running from Leighton beach to Cottesloe beach ( 4.5km )

Is any one else entering the Bay 2 Beach SUP Race. It is a shorter course from Leighton Beach to Cott (4.5km).

Yeah good to catch up.

I forgot the guys name but he is ripped and has such a high cadence. I was sitting on his wake and tried to shotgun him at the line but he just put on the gas and left me with about 200m to go. If he was on a 12'6 or 14 I recon he would of been up there with Galvo.

I'll be paddling the Bay2Beach but won't be putting up much competition, yet !

There is also an 8km paddle at lancelin in March as part of a multi sport event that can be entered separately

I have kited alot in march there is a high chance of ssw in the afternoon. Depends what time it is. Going to be hard work by the looks. But you may be lucky and get a light offshore.

That's all I need to hear to skip taking the risk.

Will be doing the Bay2Beach though.

For me, there are only 2 types of sup racing. Either in and out through a break like bop, or down wind. I reckon its a bit like snow skiing as it really doesn't go to well uphill
