Hey guys,

Just want to see if you young guns (or old gums;-) can advise on the plausibility of a move that I think could work but have not seen done before on a SUP...

THE SCENARIO
It's a perfect 3-4 foot ground swell, a big set is looming and you are caught inside, best you can do take it on the head or paddle out and over...

THE MOVE
When you see the how-to vids on pivot turns, they always use huge sups, sink the tail and pivot around. typically with 2-3 forward strokes on the "outside" of the turn. Practicing on flatwater on my 8'10 Allwave, paddling up to speed and doing a backward stroke on the "inside" seemed to turn much faster and if I manage to also sink the tail without the board spearing upward I can get almost fully around in 1 stroke... but really tough to do consistently.

THE QUESTION:
In the scenario above, if you could charge out and sink the tail in a pivot turn as you hit the base of the wave, would the face provide the tail lift needed to keep the board from spearing up and actually launch it back down the wave? I have seen this done on short surf skis, but never on a SUP.

is this plausible? Has anyone pulled it off?

Cheers
Rory

Y'know I reckon I've done this (coincidentally on an Allwave) but only as an unexpected consequence of effing up the up-and-over . Haven't ever been able to replicate the move deliberately.

Yep, you will see videos of Laird doing this from quite some years ago. Also, Phil Trigger down here in Vic does this often.

Thanks z'man yep found one of Laird here here... www.dailymotion.com/video/xgdtrw

The move is at 2:00 in the video, more a big round turn then off the lip. Looked to be the toughest move of the whole vid

Wow. Haven't seen that one before, sounds way harder than on a sup without a paddle to pivot on :)

Thanks Rosscoe, Laird's a legend, be keen to find some footage of Phil doing this one.

If anyone has any footage of the whole move be keen to get a link... i've been trawling for ages trying to find it.

any guns here with personal experience would be great to hear from.

Why not paddle the board toward the wave fins first...then when the wave hits, jump up and land your feet 180 degs on the board? Or are you looking at doing it as a trick, and not for practical reasons? (not being cynical, just curious as to why?)

It's a fairly common gybe manoeuvre in windsurfing...you sail directly at the face of the wave and carve gybe it 180deg on the face (or so I've seen in vids, my attempts haven't been as glamorous).

Found a Zane S. vid that might help, although a bit more technical than I'd propose.

Just trying to catch the wave, but pretty high cool factor as well I think :)

Hadn't considered paddling the board to it backwards however i'd prefer not to be paddling around backwards out the back waiting for the big set. I'm already goofy

Zane' s vid was more about having a bit of fun in the smaller surf rather than bumping the wave count up but he was entertaining for sure.

Cheers

I was told by DC that he can paddle out into and onto an oncoming wave on his 17 footer. Saw him on the weekend at Burleigh ripping on what looked like a 12'6 and showing everyone up so maybe he's got some advice on the technique.

It's called a Boomerang. Tom Carrol does them on his SUP.

Thanks sharper there are some great tips in that article. Certainly encouraged to practice it. Strange that it is so tough to find decent video footage of it. Goes to show how new our sport really is.
