Chasing some direction on which SUP would be suitable to catch small 2ft waves on, and flatwater paddle with the pup. I've done some forum & web searching and am getting confused between the different year models/board models for various brands. And I'm not that keen on inflatables.

It would be 50/50 surf and flatwater, I am at 85kgs and with the 14kg border collie we approach 100kgs combined mass. Have a 10'6 Nalu GT and at 160L volume we struggled on the last flatwater paddle when some very small cross chop picked up and pup wanting to lean out over the side to look at everything!

Suggestions? I've been reading up on the larger Nalu's, and the Starboard Boards.

A 12.6 or 14 footer would be great, I can paddle my wife around so a pet should be no problem and would probably listen to you more as well??

I'd still like to know from someone more familiar with SUPs which one would work best here

Without knowing a lot about it, something with a full deck pad forward, some of the Jimmy Lewis models maybe?

have you thought of a 9,8 foot soft top .....naish Quest ...200 litres .surf ok .too......dog friendly

has a 11,2 as well.

The starboard avanti would be ideal, you could even surf with the dog on the board, they are a bit pricey though, Im 120kg and my nephew is 23kg and we can paddle easy on the flatwater. You should also look at the carbon as the glass models are bloody heavy.
Some of the bigger blue planets would also appeal as paddling with your dog is popular in hawaii. Also look up Chris de Aboitiz, supdogoz I think the website is that will give you a few ideas.

When taking your dog on a SUP, volume is your friend and on surf SUP's, I have found that 32" width helps too. I currently take my dog on a Naish Javelin x28 raceboard mostly. That said, I have used a Naish Nalu 10'10 extensively to SUP with my dog on it and it is super stable with 200+L of volume (I weigh 85kgs). The 10'10 is also surfable in smaller waves, though I am not sure it would be my choice if you are going to surf 50/50. I have not paddled the Quest line but the 9'8 and 11'2 look they look like they could work well, as will the Avanti though it is a wide board. The older Laird 12'1 would be awesome and is very fun in the waves.

The board is the right size (10' x 32" x 5") for our combined weight, 90+ kg + 15 kg.
Col Twyford sold me this board back in 2002 he made it from two blanks.
(It is a dog to surf). I would generally recommend short and fat for the board.
Especially if you can train the dog to the front.
The temperament of my dog is good, she positions well on the board. Not sure about your border collie.
The board now has its own deckpad on the nose, the fur and the wax just got to be too awful.

We stick to very flat water - the dog avoids white water, so I have given up on the idea of surfing with it.
It is pretty hard around my way to get a dog onto a beach.

researching more info on these boards now. The dog is pretty good on the board, highly trained she will sit where I tell her but after last time paddling in the slightest chop on the 10'6 it wasn't any fun at all. At 5'6 I've got pretty good balance and surfing experience, and I figure I'll just use the surfboards more in the surf breaks and use the sup for what they are designed for - getting me into waves that no one else would get to, and cruising about with the pooch.
I hate leaving her in the ute or home on a nice morning when we could be both out for a paddle

Curtis is a very good boy there, Molly has a life jacket too - I know they can swim but I had to rescue a tired dog that was close to drowning once, it's owner had let it go and the leash was snagged on seaweed creating a massive sea anchor. Moral is, like us they can't swim all day too and safety never takes a day off.

i noticed that your SUP is riding a lot lower in the water than the girls sups in your vid - ours was worse than this on the 10'6 Nalu, making us very unstable. How did you find this on yours? Although it is only 30" wide

I take my dog out on my 11'6 NSP full deck grip for him, would be a perfect one for you.

I'm almost 100kg and Cutis is almost 40kg so the 10'6" Nalu would be almost under water for us.. My 11' Mana is about 33"-34" wide.. so that helps..

The extra width helps heaps so a board like the 9'8"x 34" Quest would also be very good for you.. It's the old Odysseus.. Super stable and floaty but also paddles great.

I have a Mana and love it, small waves, flat water, dog but no wife it's to hard to balance.

Hey funkyllama - funnily enough I have both the Odysseus and the 10' Mana. The Odysseus is my wife's 'stable table' board and is damn near impossible to fall off. It tracks a lot better in a straight line due to the channels in the bottom too. That being said, my 10' Mana is still super stable at 33" wide (for my 112kgs) and flat water paddles just fine. I'd go for the Mana - it's just a lot better on the waves, and I often carry a small ~10kg pupper on the deck pad just in front of the handle with no problems.

No probs at all! Both will easily carry you & the dog but yeah the Mana is probably better if you're venturing into the surf 50% of the time. The Odysseus will do 'stand & glide' on the waves, but is a little difficult to turn due to width, the channels and the super chunky rails, while the Mana has a bit more rocker, a more pulled in nose & tail, and thinner rails therefore is better for a 'do a bit of everything okay' SUP in my opinion. Best of luck with whatever you go with!

So ended up going with the 10'0 Mana. Will get it out for a spin on the weekend to see how it goes...

Review so far...
Mana is stable and floaty with the pup onboard. Manoeuvrable on waves. Slower than the Nalu and doesn't track as well. Am finding it catches waves later than the Nalu but has good manners with a steeper takeoff. On the Nalu I had to 2 step back to the tail to get it to turn, then back up to set a rail.

I found for a board that size I prefer the Nalu's cruisier longboard style of riding, and flatwater tracking. I'll give the Mana a few more sessions, but i think the Nalu 10'6 was about perfect for how I want to sup. I'm wondering if the 11'0 Nalu handles similar and if I should have gone with that instead!
