Time for a holiday. A nice place great weather and some surf. My wife said Waikiki.
BLUE PLANET
I can not say enough for the assistance and great people at Blue Planet.
I surf a Deep 10' 1'' x 30" long board style sup. Closest I could get to hire was a 10ft x 28" long board style sup from blue planet. This was an awesome board on a wave but for myself was going to wear me out after a week trying to stay on it. Ideal board if your good on a 28" wide board. So they swopped the board for me no hassle at all. I got a stun gun 10'2" x 31" . This made my week. great board to surf, lots of fun. I highly recommend these guys.
OUTRIGGER BEACH RESORT.
Magic place to stay. Nice spacious room , right on the beach. They stored my board in the bag room at no extra cost. Really nice blokes on bell desk. Opened up for me at 5.30 each morning for the 1st of my days surf, had another around lunch time and then an evening surf.
You don't even need to cross a road. Pick your board up walk past Dukes and into the water, and paddle out.
While your waiting for a wave there's plenty to look at. Lots of turtles etc..
Now a holiday costs money, but the service I got from blue planet and the convenience from outrigger was worth every dollar I spent.

Stayed at outrigger over 20 years ago service was the same, Hawaii its just a magical place.

What were the crowds like (in the line-up)? How many breaks can you access from that location (without driving)?

Given the location, it seems like it could be a good place to go with your partner if your partner does not like surfing (but loves the beach/restaurants/shops/etc) - a good compromise. Agree?

Given the breaks seem pretty crowed... is it fair to say a long board style (cruiser) is a better way to go than shorter performance? Or can you get a bit of room to move? Seems there are a lot of party waves at Waikiki.....

I got back about three weeks ago, I found going out at first light (0530 ish) was great, as the numbers out was ok and not too crowded, about 0730 - 0800 the crowd doubled, I usually had enough by then and went back to hotel for breakfast, and the family was just getting up, so didn't annoy she who must be obeyed.

After 0900 you move up to queens and it's not overly crowded as it's a bit far the surfers and beginners.

A good compromise absolutely. As Kitemantim says 5.30 is the time for your 1st surf of the day. Out in front of the outrigger is fun. Doesn't take to long for the crowd to mount up though. As you looking out from the outrigger there's a break to the left of you. I found that by staying to the right of that crowd I got a lot of waves to myself as the majority of longboards went straight in being a lot of beginners so even though it was dropping in you didn't have someone up your bum. Unless its a local of course, they can all surf, so give them some respect. But then when it gets that crowded like around early arvo good luck as it seems that anything goes. You can paddle further towards Diamond head and there's another break there. But the better wave is pops out to your right looking out from the beach. Better wave and the most I had out there was about 10 or 12. Takes about 10 mins to paddle and then there are some more breaks as you keep heading towards the marina, so there's quite a few breaks with an easy paddle. I was surprised at how few sups there were out compared to the million long boards

Lots of party waves but with a paddle board being able to paddle around quite quickly as opposed to a long board you can get yourself in a good spot pretty well. Out in front absolutely a long board style sup which works fine at pops as well but if you were only going to surf pops which is a better wave bit faster then yes perhaps a more performance board . But in saying that you'll get a lot more waves on a long board style sup . The beauty of being able to move around on a sup to different spots with ease.
