If a true novice stay away from others In a south wind Bilinga to Tugun can be fun with no one around

Tally creek inside is also a great place with little runners inside
teaches you balance and how to set up and wave and it
Out going tide not recommended for here though if you have just started

north winds Tally is also ok however all beginner waves are shot
go south and find a spot to yourself

I'd head down to the Alley at Currumbin. Just stay wide more towards the North. Yes, it can get crowded but most people there are pretty good.

after surfing, sup surfing and kiting on the GC for the last 3 years, it is a place that I'd like to now avoid.

Lets talk about the point breaks. anything over 4ft and the place turns into the quicksilver pro, forget about trying to pick a few of your own chilled rides, its every man and his dog fighting for a wave. agro wankers everywhere - forget about having a nice chilled, fun sup session there (currumbin alley for instance), the shortboarders will literally collide into you if you are trying to paddle on the inside through the breakers. this is during the week, so i'd hate to think of how bad the weekends would be. never in my life had I witnessed a "shortage" of waves and oversupply of surfers.

how about the open beaches - yes they are better, but if its a straight swell (East or high period) forget about that as well - unless you want to embarass yourself, or are about to go pro on your 7'0 by 27". again, some spots are better than others, but generally anything with a decent run will have a packed out line up.

in general the GC is just too crowded, full of tourists and too many agro locals. yes, most of them are OK, but its the small few who ruin it for everyone.

looking forward to spending Xmas on the east coast of NZ and getting some nice, chilled empty 2-3ft rides with some of the locals there - all good dudes for sure. when I was there last year, there was a SUP surfer out the back literally shouting out to the rest of the line up when the good rides are coming through. pure stoke. take me back oh yeah!!!

Daughter and myself had Miami to ourselves mid last week. Wasn't perfect but heaps of fun. Plenty of times during the week can be uncrowded and fun. The weekends can be hard work. The central surfers parasite stretch can get you uncrowded waves fairly often surprisingly enough.
