I was looking through my past gopro footage and realised that it is all either on a paddle mount or on the front of the board. It gets a little boring after a while and each has their own drawbacks.

I found the paddle mount would simply bury under water during top turns is also hard to watch as I move my paddle around alot
and the front mount is also really jerky as I like to pump along the wave to gain speed.

What has everyone found the best to capture good footage of SUP surfing? I really liked porchy73 helmet mounted swivel cam

Or do I bite the bullet and invest in a soloshot?

I am not a fan of the board mount view and generally prefer a head cam or paddle cam that looks "out" down the line, rather than at the nose of the board. Ultimately, you cannot beat a camera held by a third party - either out in the water or from the beach. Yeah.... everyone would rather film themselves I guess.

Getting the camera higher off the deck.. and further away from you helps..

I use this on the nose, the centre and have even had it under the board down waves (it's a great shot). I recommended it to the water ski crew at work for their boats, poles and skis. They swear by it. Check out goworx.com/

Looks good. Where did you buy yours from? Doesn't seem to be available from their website.

I think (many beers ago) I hit products, then mounts, selected a colour, add to cart, view cart, proceed to checkout, hand over my coin, and Shazam! All done. I prefer this mount to the standard suction cup. It's a lower profile, and you've got three cups instead of one for redundancy. Sticks like buggery, but the tabs on each cup make it easy to remove. You just push them to the side and break the seal. Really happy with it.

I really like the results I get with a "headmount"

It gives a decent area of action, plus wherever you look, you are filming. Great for shots of others while paddling out.

When shooting action shots as I surf, I aim the camera down and shifted to my "backhand" side (I am regular foot, so I shift it to the left side of my head) This gives the best vantage surfing frontside or backside because of the way your head is facing, it is always aimed in the direction you are going.

Best worn in relaxed conditions because it gets ripped off your head easily in crunchy surf.... but the videos are worth the hassle

To see a video I posted that is mostly shot with a headmount, go to
"Board Talk" then the thread
"Which longboard style sup? "... the surf is bigger in the last half.

Here is a collage of screen shots from my headmount videos for a look at the vantage point in most situations

My GoPro suction cup certainly doesn't work on my GX Javelin, matte finish :-(

Very good question. Tried it on an x32 LE which was sort of a grotty gloss/matt finish, it stuck just fine. Here's a tip that you'll love, lick the cups. Off the topic the go pro manual said to lick the lense cover if water drops were annoying you. I did so, but was filming at time. My kids were dismayed at the playback. I thought it was funny as.....

Mat finish = a pencil to draw around the suction cup where you want it on you board, 1 sheet of 600 grit wet and dry sandpaper and 3 1/2 minutes of your time. Oh and a small amount of water.

Thats a cool set up DJ, and would definitely suit cruising along waves or down winders
And I love the footage from Dogmans contraption but can't see myself going to that much effort. Although maybe some pvc pipe taped to my butt might be alright.

I guess any angle gets boring if it is the only angle, so best bet would be to mix it up a little.

1 surf on your paddle, next surf on the nose, next surf on tail etc..... until you have enough footage for a cool little edit.

We jimmied up our own hat rig which we use in smaller waves. It sees what you see and you don't tend to know it's there. Use the display case mount and cut it back to fit on the hat brim. Drill some holes, add some pop rivets and there you have it ... Hat cam. Here is some footage shot from the paddlers perspective as well as filming the paddler.

Really good view but tricky is right where your leash connects to your board. Having a mount placed there and elevated a bit gives you a good shot down the line and of your butt. I just had your normal go pro surf mount then attached a short pvc pipe to my camera to elevate it 30cm higher. Great if you twerk alot. Just be careful of your leash as it can rip the whole thing off during wipeouts.

I'm thinking of attaching a go pro to a float with a weighted keel that's tied a few feet behind the board for a follow cam effect. Not sure if it will work but will post results once I get the time to build one

I've been thinking about that also..

I'm thinking rods rather than rope.. and a wide cat like float to add stability without drag..

Looking forward to see what you come up with..

Thanks Moyzie,
We have 2 prototype on board attachments as well. One is for shortboard and the other is for longboard and SUP. This is Jarrods 1st attempt with the shortboard mount. We have a vid to release soon but I can't show pics yet as the mounts are still in production. Stay tuned

Always a good idea . This is an on board mount nick-named "The widow maker" attached to a 6'0. The longboard mount is crazy on both sup and longboard and it's pretty cool to watch traditional footwork on both boards. I'll try get a sneak peak to throw up soon.
PS - DJ did a pretty good job with his vid and music selection
