We recently had Bert Burger in-store and we fired him up with a beers.
So here it is - the first part of Bert talking about how it all started and an in-depth talk on board design

Bert Burger (the man behind the parabolic rail and Firewire), is larger than life with an amazing story of survival through the ups and downs of the surfboard industry since the 70's.

Grab a beer as we did, sit back and hear from the brilliant mind of an intelligent and creative man possessed with a life-long desire improve his boards and the experience for all those who use ride them.

Part one of the series covers his history and how outline, contour and rocker affect a boards performance.

I hope you enjoy it as much as we did!

Part 2 on its way!

Dang I like it when people talk to me!

I just learned more about board design than I have in 50 years of surfing every kind of board.

I knew when I liked a board, but never dissected it.... I let the shapers worry about that.

Bert is frickin' awesome. Still stoked and passionate and happy to pass on his knowledge so even I can understand it.

Thanks Bert and AA!

Great, Great, GREAT! Bert is a genius! I'm sure he's forgotten more about boards and design than 9/10ths of most shapers will ever know. Thanks AA and Bert! That was fantastic!

Love that camera angle from the left.

It is a pleasure to put this footage together. So much to learn!

Bert refers to some videos in his talks. Here is one of them on the XXX SPEEED - one of our favourites.
This video is still a 'work-in-progress' but when Bert talks about the design aspects of each individual board it really starts to bring it all togther.

Great video. I have a question. About half way through Bert said that the Speeed has water over the edges of the board which makes it more stable - rather than being fat and bobbing around like a cork. But how sensitive is that to the weight of the rider? I assume that anyone suited to a board (e.g. 8'10" 130 l) would sink it enough to achieve this effect.

I am really glad to watch Bert dissect the SPEEED.... it is the Sunova that attracted my attention.

I have been following all the "Vanguard" style board evolving in Oz, because they looked like a way for me to go with less width, while maintaining stability.
The problem was, I am not a fan of wide-flat tails, they are just not my cup of tea.

The SPEEED looks to have all the design features that match my needs..... plus I LOVE the Sunova construction theory!

I am going to be SPEEEDY soon

Wow. It was an unbelievably great trip and i like to thank all our great dealers and shops here in Oz for their unreal support and trust in our brand. The way it looks like you will see a lot more of us next season. and some nice surprises. But especially more of what we like to stand for. PERFORMANCE, DURABILITY, light WEIGHT.

If you like to see more of Bert's outstanding and amazing knowledge check out also our YouTube channel. This was the first YourOwnShaper Event we did a year ago in Germany. Sometimes you just want more and more. I still cannot get enough after talking to Bert daily.

More videos will follow as we gradually are working thru. Step by Step... ;-)

Thanks again to all you Aussies...

Yeah Tino, you guys didn't stop for 2 weeks straight- you deserve a holiday in Thailand!

Probably the most interesting session of them of all - Board Flex.

Thanks to Natural Necessities Surf shop for the awesome surfing footage of Jacey Shimahara on the Acid

For the uninitiated....

Thanks AA, Have followed up on Coastal Surf Supply. Apparently they have only a few of last season's Sunova sups....and are offering them on Ebay for full retail.

And from what I've heard (second hand) they have no immediate plans to bring any new stock in.

Interesting videos no doubt.

Pitty that he mixes some interesting knowledge as a great and experienced shaper with some waffling that i would expect more from a sales or a marketing guy.

The Guy is a genius I love how he doesn't hide anything and just says it as it is not trying to hide the knowledge we are all better for that

Here it is guys the final instalment on Bert's in depth discussion on board design.

Here he breaks down a few myths and talks about fin design and how it affects the perfomance of your board.

Enjoy

Made a lot of sense. Verified why a short steep rocker SUP board of mine needed some pumping for it to perform. My mate loved it & I thought it was sluggish & bogged down. That is because my mate performs on it & I am more of a cruiser than a bruiser. But this will help me to get motivated to practice the pumps etc.
Thanks Bert very interesting. You definitely know your stuff.
