Hi,

I'm heading north from Sydney with my partner in a couple of weeks and officially doing our first SUP road trip. Can't wait to be honest. Probably will get as far as the Queensland border before being turfed back.

We're both rank beginners in the surf, although SUP'd on flat water for a couple of years now. I'm looking for any locations that would be easy to learn. Tiny surf would be good and full waves.

Any thoughts?

Go to Umina beach first and then I would check out Fingal beach in Port Stephens. Further north there are plenty of good spots but I'm not sure for beginners. I'm sure others will help.

Umina is super mellow, good campsite right at the beach, walk from your tent or cabin straight to the waves. Also the small bay between Bateau Bay and Shelley Beach, just a bit further North is also a good beginner spot. Also a good campsite right on the beach. On a smaller day, Shelley is a SUP surf haven. Some god flatwater exploration around the area too. Then it's beach breaks to Newcastle. Lots of options all the way to the border.

Fingal Bay and Shoal Bay great for beginners. Holiday Park across road from Fingal. Wait until Feb then kids back at school.

the inside corner at south west rocks is a long mellow ride - protected, safe and shallow sand bottom.

That's great guys. Please keep 'em coming. Anything further north?

Stamp, we were planing to go to SWR anyway as it's a top spot. Are you referring to the southern corner near the gaol? I've sailed there but can't remember any surf.

Hi Reddo, yep; on a decent swell the waves wrap around the point at the gaol. it's a great wave for beginner's and you can ride a nice cruisy wave a long way down the beach from the point at low tide past the caravan park and further

(btw - if you can drive a 5.8 with two on wire then a SUP in the surf will be easy to handle)

Crescent Head, Hat Head and Sawtell are some good spots. Haven't done much surfing further north than that.
