Hey guys
First time going to Bali.. got 10 days staying in Legian..not till September..just wondering if there are some good SUP waves close by i can paddle too or do I need to plan a day trip elsewhere. Not taking my boards at this stage either so will need to hire. Thanks for letting me jump on this post.

Hey Supmaori,
We generally always stay in Legian when in Bali for at least a few days... You will get waves there in Sept just straight off the beach and there are generally a couple of gutters and banks that will have a nice right and left beach break. It can get pretty heavy there though if the swell is big and tends to just close out.....
I have hired from Jankie before and he is a good guy to deal with. They will deliver a board to your hotel for a few bucks and pick up again before you go. I would suggest taking your own paddle and maybe leggie for a bit of piece of mind though.
You can always take a short trip to Kuta Reef (go early to beat the crowd) or up to Caangu which is a great SUP wave. Do you know which hotel you are staying at??
Hey man,
Thanks for the reply. We are staying at the Swiss- Belinn Legian on Padma Utara.
Sounds awesome man..happy to make an effort to score some nice waves.
I guess a 3 peice paddle would be the go then.
Jankie has been mentioned a few times to me..sounds like a good dude to deal with. So to get to a kuta reef you need to hire a boat? What about Caangu..is that far from Legian..hire a driver? Boat?
Cheers man
Ahhh yep that's a good spot...
We normally stay beachside in the same block at either the Melasti or Puri Raja. Haven't stayed at the Swiss but it looks nice.
Couple of hints for that immediate area
- The corner bar across the road does good meals as do most of the small warungs in the area. There is a newish caf? on the corner opposite the Ossotel and it does a great breakfast feed and coffee.
- Coffee at Mugshots.... Proper espresso style
- Money changing... Beware of the small money changers that are on the street. There is one opposite Mugshots that is a confirmed rip-off. If they are offering a rate that is way more than most... Ripoff. And they are really good at it too. The best place to change money in that area is the Kodak shop just down the street a bit opposite the Spa Bali Padma. You will see the lady with the bright red lipstick and she is cool as and honest... never had an issue getting money changed there.
- You can get straight to the beach down a laneway between the Nikosoma and the Bandha Hotels.... this will put you right on possibly the best break on the beach. Pretty much always a good bank there.... head down the beach towards Kuta for other peaks etc.
- Legian Beach does not break well on low tide and sometimes the swell disappears completely. Best timing is the rising swell early in the morning before the wind gets up. You can get a massive change in swell size with the change of tide.
To get to Kuta Reef you need to drive to Kuta then take a boat. The boat guy will come pick you up whenever you ask him to. I have gotten a boat from the beach at Legian all the way to Uluwatu one time but that was a while ago. Talk to the guys who have the warungs on the beach... they always know a guy...
Same with Caangu. you need a driver to take you and there are often some good guys just out on the street. It does take a while as the traffic up near Caangu is normally off the planet but the key for visiting anywhere for a surf is to arrange it the day before and hit the road early.... early early.....
Have fun... you will enjoy it!!!
