HI all, was just wondering if Bali was back to its usual crowded best in the surf. Am going over with the wife and am debating whether to take a surfboard or not. If things look too good to resist I could always hire something ( maybe a SUP or some longboard for Cangu) . Honestly would rather just do other touristy things than put up with hassles in the surf.

And speaking of hire, and I know its mentioned a bit in here although times have moved on, is there sup hire anywhere around Nusa Dua. Our time is split up between Nusa Dua and Cangu.

I've just found out from the minister for travel we are staying at this place, the Merusaka, which is right in front of the channel. There would have to be waves either side that surly.

When are you travelling? Cangu onshore this time of year. At Sanur now, seems pretty quiet on land but water busy. First time I have stayed at Sanur usually go to Kuta/Cangu stretch in July. Baby reef is full of beginners with a tiny swell. Kites and wing dings out in arvo. I had a cruise on a ding out to the reef and about 10 followed me out, what a surprise

Going in a couple of weeks, have never stayed at Nusa Dua, but one of those deals came up and thought, why not? I actually went to Hawaii a couple of years ago (pre covid) and for all the stories you hear about the heavy locals, it was really mellow and they were mostly pretty friendly out in the surf. Bali by comparison (pre covid) I've found to be like sitting in the line up at Snapper everywhere you go, hence why I was wondering if the crowds are back in full swing.

Very hard to get good rental gear. I would take my own. As I have.

We surfed Nusa Dua a couple of years ago for the First Cosmic revolution gathering.... and it was Epic!! The right hander breaking into the channel in front of where you are staying is called chickens (guess cause it is a bit smaller than the rest of the reef when it is firing) and it is a great wave. There is a strong sweep down the reef when the swell is a good size, but this doesn't affect a SUP as much.

Ben at Priority SUP is probably one of the best bets for hire, although Joni at the Rip Curl school in Sanur may be able to sort you out too.... But personally, I would always try and take my own gear...

We will be back for the Cosmic in April.... Can't Fricken Wait!!!

on the sup hire question, there was several places (prior to covid)to hire a big dog with a paddle around Nusa dua.
in front of mushy rock at gega beach there was 2 places adjacent to each other that hired lots of boards. maybe 40 between them.It was 10 bucks for 4 hours and they don't care what the conditions are like . some of them were pretty beat up. there was another joint up towards the south about 2 k that also had hire sups.

Got on to Priority Sups and they seem pretty helpful. Didn't want to get any ol' beatup big dog
I am happy with something that will cruise up and down the reef while checking things out and take a wave with some level of confidence in the board when the opportunity arises.
