Just back from Bali yesterday and spent 3 days at the Bombora wave lodge in Medewi.
What a spot!!
I didn't get any hassle on the SUP (at least any worse than at home) but did hang wide most of the time as it gets pretty crowded in the middle once everyone gets out of bed. I was the only SUP on the break but there were plenty of Mals and plenty of learners being pushed in by the locals.... this can be a bit of a hazard but the break is pretty easy to read and if you sit just outside it is easy to jump on the wider waves.
There is also a pretty good looking right hander around the corner and heading into the next (southern) bay and while we had 30 odd on the main break, there were only 5-6 guys out there.... I didn't look much up the beach (to the north) but there would be reasonable beach banks there as well. The local guys were pretty good IMO... had a good chat to a few... bought the compulsory T-shirt to support the local board riders and a couple of photo discs and didn't have any hassle from them. They are aggressive surfers though and have got the break absolutely wired. Interestingly I did see a couple of older guys send some young crew back inside after they got a bit keen on the main take off.... there is definitely a hierarchy there.
We stayed at the Bombora wave lodge for the 3 days which was phenomenal... a shade on the exy side for Bali but absolutely overlooking the main break, the most comfortable beds in Bali and the best quality food.... well worth it! We also stayed 2 nights at the Puri Dajuma Eco lodge which is on the next point south.... another fantastic place to stay (especially if you are with the family) and it is only about 1km up the beach to the Medewi main break (10-15min drive in the free shuttle). There are some good little banks along this beach as well and no people!
So early May was pretty good at Medewi but apparently Jun/Jul the place is packed! Personally, I would steer clear at that time just to save the hassle of the crowd but this spot has definitely made my off season list!!
Went back to Legian after that and the swell had picked up... There were a few good banks there on the high tide but the clean up sets were brutal. Didn't have time to get out to Kuta Reef but it would have been great out there too.....
