Hawaiian charge $100 per SUP, They never seem to worry about Clubbie Boards or 9 foot mals

Hi - was there last December - $20 per hour on the beach - one block back from the DUKE statue is a hire place on the corner, but behind the Hyatt Sheraton, only 50 metres away from the corner is a great place where you can negotiate hourly and daily hire - paddles are a bit ordinary but easier than waiting at the airport.
A great place to SUP on the north shore is Puaeena point (Haleiwa)

Some hotels have sup and board storage, some you need your own locks too
Some hotels you need to give them to the porter each time and tip them.
There are good hire boards at turtle bay.
If you get a hire car to take your board around the island with soft racks make sure it doesn't have a center aerial, you can't get your board on
All the hire boards at wakiki are long and wide
Theres lots of sup waves to go and find too.

Ok. I just went up to Hawaiian check in(I work at Sydney International and they are one of my customers) and asked the service desk what the regulations are. You are allowed 2 bags per person at 30kg each, plus a board as your free check in luggage.

Check out http://www.hawaiisurfboardrentals.com. I hired surfboards from them on a trip and now they do SUP. The service is fantastic, they drop off and pick up to you accommodation. If you hire for more than a few days they will pick up from anywhere on Oahu. They will also swap out boards if you want to try something else. The most amazing service. I was impressed with there range, service and the condition of the boards.

If you have wheels, Surftech hire SUPs from Ala Moana (At least they did a couple of years ago).

Another massive thumbs up for hawaiisurfboardrentals.com. I have rented mals from Dan on 3-4 different trips, great service. I am also considering grabbing a SUP off him when I head over again on April.

Instead of turning right at Haleiwa to the North Shore,turn left at the round about head down past Waialua to the Mokalea stretch,no crowds , gets a bit more exposure to the trades , but again no crowds.

I went to Waikiki and heleiwa last month - for a few days Waikiki was 5ft plus so no one on he beach would hire out sups and the surf was bigger than most beginners could cope with, hence not that busy out on canoes etc But when the swell dropped later in the week look out it was surf carnage with so many people and I was very worried for my board (priorities) and wish I had had a hire board!!

In the end I was really glad to take my board 8'5" sunova speeed (love this board so much) as I really got to enjoy it every day - flew qantas though no probs - the board was packaged up like a Christmas present see photo - thanks Sam at balmoral sup who took time out of his day to help me with it ( the packaging is now under the garage for next time)

I stayed at outrigger and left my board in the board /luggage room and the bellhops just waved me in and out 3 times a day - i do wonder how often boards get nicked - I thought oh well travel insurance !!

Anyway you will have a blast either way- make sure you go to Haleiwa joes and have some awesome fish for dinner - if you need somewhere to stay in Haleiwa with kids or without pm me I know a good place on the river....

On this cold afternoon wishing I too was hawaii bound ....can someone organize a sup only trip for next year from Sydney please....

Also yoga mats from Target top and bottom, $4 each and weigh only a few grams, perfect to double up the thickness of your bag without any weight gain
