We've booked a week in Jan in Torquay. I've only ever been down at this time of year(during Bells) when the air and water are both cold. I'd like to know what to expect in January? Warm air? Warm water? Is there usually swell? Etc...
Also are there any guys down there that would like to catch up and surf with me?

Usually warm air - (25-35 degrees), warm water (for vic, about 18 degrees) , can have a good day here or there, but depends on Easterly summer winds, which are onshore... Usually very early surfs are best to try make best with the morning offshores...

"Every man and his dog" is a good saying that comes to mind for Torquay in January. Obviously lots of nook and cranny's with rideable waves yet so many people it hurts.
Learning the short drive to 13th beach Barwon Heads would be a positive move for a surfer of any vessel this time of year.
Loads of options with different car park outlooks and coincidental car park positioned banks along this stretch that are great for Sup surfing in a Nth to Nth East summer wind.
Another option is Johanna, Nth to Nth East wind when the swell is too small for Torquay and 13th, Johanna will more than likely be pumping and well worth the drive. Red road or Blue road, potential banks galore and the chance of surfing an Ace bank with not many others.
Take a wetty, Johanna water can be icy on a 40 degree day, crazy flu like moments when your not sick.
If you want a good sight seeing option after surfing 13th Beach, catch the Ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento across Port Philip Bay.
Foot passenger return will cost $20 per person I think, loads of dolphins an infamous tidal Point Break and some of Australia's most expensive beach style homes can be viewed from the Ferry. Private helicopters parked on the lawn, outside elevators down to the beach from the house, its quite bewildering.
My family and I teach and hire SUP's directly next to the Ferry terminal at Sorrento, come and say Hi if your on your way past.

Even in summer the water is cold down here.
Point Danger at Torquay at high tide and Point Roadknight at low tide are the good surfing spots. I'll try and get down that way while you're here and catch up with you.

Pt Danger works on a n-nw wind, roadie on a SW ideally. Very different waves, power at Pt Danger (like bells) and super mellow mushburgers at Roadie. Expect roadie to be absolutely packed over school holidays.

There are so many other spots to go with way less crowds (depending on tide and wind)

Cathedral, Jarosite, Red Rock, Addis, Bells, Guvvos, Lorne, Wye, Kennett, Urquarts, Sunnymead, 13th etc.
