The final race of the triple crown is on now (Sunday in Hawaii). It is from Maui to Molokai...about 40kms. Andy Davies is in 6th position over the series so a good result could put him into the top 3 - although the Top 3 are very very solid! Realistically, I think he has a chance of 4th if he beats Mark Raaphorst and Jeremy Riggs. Go Andy!

Talked with Jeremy on the maliko shuttle today. He said the race conditions were all time.

He said it may have been the most enjoyable downwinder he's ever done. Jeremy has done a lot of smoking downwinders and never exaggerates. He said the swells were some of the biggest he's ever seen. Groomed, big and fast.

I'm super happy for the Aussies that got to experience it. Us locals are so fortunate to get a few epic runs per year. Glad the window worked for the travelers.

Y'all will get some good stories from your mates on that race.

The Naish race conditions were originally looking great, but a low may move in and spoil the wind. Still a bit far out, so it may improve to standard 20-30 conditions. They are expecting 300 entries this year.

Hey Larry.. Are you going to do the Naish race this year?.. Any ideas how much it costs to enter?

Fingers crossed the conditions are great for the 300 doing it.

The Maui to Molokai race on Saturday was definately the most fun race i've ever done. Wind was smokin' and the last 8-10miles were insane!

Congrats to Andy, finishing in 11th place overall and 8th in the Men's elite class, 27 miles in 3hr 49minutes.

I was stoked with my time of 4hr 38minutes and i didn't come last this time either. Got the longest glides i've ever had and the quickest miles i've ever done, even though i fell off a few times along the way.

Sorry i don't have any pics, will keep trying to find someone who does.

The trip back to Maui yesterday morning was fun in a 24ft fishing boat, we left early to go 'before' the wind got up but even at 8:30am there were some awesome looking runs we were hammering into, with the occasional wave going right over the roof of the boat.

The wind is still howling here and we had a great Maliko run yesterday afternoon (I was planning to rest the day after the race but it was too good to miss!), but even a great Maliko run is pretty hard to compare to the channel.

Today I managed to get in 3 Maliko runs for the first time and the final one at sunset was my quickest run yet. Stoked!

Larry, didn't meet you on the shuttle today, but if you're there later in the week I'll try to say hi!

Wind is looking good for the next few days too so hopefully plenty more fun to be had this week.

Just go hard every day. Paddle Maliko as much as you can you'll be home in two weeks. So you can rest up then.
Are you bringing your f16 back to Australia

Hi DJ, I may do the Naish if the wind is up. Race fee is 50 for early entry, 60 Saturday before the race and 70 race day.

As you might expect, I'm terribly spoiled here. I've done the Naish a few times, it's a blast. I've been paddling heaps lately, but don't have a competitive SUP fire burning. I get my threshold work biking in the mountains. Going into the red on a standup is less thrilling to me than medium effort graceful turns on the F-16. So, I'll only do SUP races if conditions are ripping. If I had a bullet I'd probably be more competition oriented. Those things really fly.

When conditions are lighter, I use an oc-1 or meander around on my f-16. Conditions have been quite good lately, as they usually are in summer. It's actually been rather NE lately, which lights up the south shore run.

That's good for me, as I live in Kihei. I've been comparing my times, average and top speeds of maliko and south shore, they are almost identical. I actually prefer the south shore because it's more groomed and less technical. Tides have been strong lately, which can be murder at maliko. That and the NE winds take a bit of sting out of the glides. Like I said, I'm spoiled.

The only exception is when the stars align and maliko goes really ape. An east fetch can rip all night for 1000+ miles, setting up HUGE swells with solid 40+ mph winds. We only get a few of those a year, they are truly amazing. I train all year, nearly every day to be ready for those episodes.
