Heh Belly

I did this race last year and is real good fun. Runs at the same time as the Whalebone longbaord comp.

Peter Dunn from Funs Back Surf Shop runs the event.

Is a really good and fun event in all.

I will definitely be doing it (note board limit is 12'6)

No probs there Reagan still have the trusty JL 12.6.. From what i here there might be a few of the new race starboards entering.. We might have our hands full if theres a few of them in it

Well last year we also had to contend with Scotty and Galvo flying out in the front as usual.

Thats whay we got to get some training in I am tired of only seeing the ass' of those two as they motor past us (and yours as well Belly ).

Couldn't do it last year so might try and do that one this year. I haven't had a chance to christen the 12'6" cruiser yet.

The best bit about this race is picking up some waves at the breaks along the way.
You went the cruiser Adam. Excellent

Wouldn't be surprised if Pete tried to organise a SUP surf contest for this as well, as he is a bit of a bandit on a SUP.

It is on again on either July 10 or 11th depending on conditions. Last year had such a good vibe with sunny skies, no wind, bulk swell and free beer in the marquee.

Once again Starboard will sponsor the race with Cash prizes for both Mens and womens divisions. There will also be a Starboard 10.5 up for grabs in a random draw.

Field may be a little closer this year with Scotty not being able to race, but I have heard rumours of a few east coast guru's coming over for the event.

It costs $55 to enter but you do get a T-shirt, entry in all prize draws, free drinks in the Marquee and a heap of other goodies.

Getting your entries in early will help a lot with the planning.

For any further information about the Whalebone contact Contest Organiser – Peter Dunn on 08 9284 7873 or Mobile 0429 847 873.

that would be disappointing if it was only 12'6" boards, 14ft or unlimited should also be included IMO.

I would say its because starboard are really focusing on the 12'6" size with their boards which is why if they are putting up some $'s they are limiting to 12'6".

I agree with you cammo. It would nice to see a bigger race scene here in WA and if people (myself included) are going to get unlimited boards, it would be great to see a division for them in the local races.

They will in time dont worry about that..

But if they had an unlimited race now and every one in WA who owns an unlimited board enters there would only be about 5 people in the race......... and thats if everyone enters it which they wouldnt so not really worth it for the 2 people that would enter..

A couple of years and there will be heaps more here im sure of it

Personally I am quite keen and more interested in the 12'6 boards.
I would love to own, train and race a 12'6. But for me at this point in my busy life it would be like taking up another sport. Amongst work, family and other interests Id need to juggle my time for paddling a race board.
Already I am so keen, passionate and addicted to SUP surfing. And also Im equally stoked about windsurfing.
Anyone heard of disc golf?
But the more I think about it... hmmm I might just look into it

The windsurfing gear will be gone in no time and you will buy a 14 or 16ft downwinding board for sure haha

Just think of the board you could buy if you got rid of a couple of windsurfer boards, 1/2 a dozen sails, 2 masts, boom, endless ropes and other bits and pieces that always break.
I'm with Belly, get a 14 footer or bigger

great comments guys but I think its a shame when a business dictates by (board) design what craft people should paddle and offer $$ to try to force the class to the forefront based upon what boards they have in their range.

Doing a downwinder on a 14ft + board is not comparable to anything smaller.

I'm not saying that it should be one size or the other, just that with the sport in its infancy, to have manufacturers dictate (through event managers) classes of boards is not the direction the sport should take. C'mon, everyone should be able to paddle, and the prizes can go to those who paddle a 12'6 starboard only.

Like the Doctor race if you want to paddle anything larger than a 12'6 go for it. You know your not eligble for a place but at least you may get to race other unlimited boards and get a bit of competition. As the sport grows I'm sure we'll start to see different divisions in the future.

I totaly agree with you a have a DC16 and id love to do a race with heaps of guys on similer boards... I just dont think its big enough here (WA) yet and having the 12.6 class incresses number of entrants because there not against unlimited boards..

Maybe this is the wrong way, competitive, greedy how ever you what to look at it but if someone offers the incentive on 1000bucks ill be on my 12.6 Jimmy Lewis NOT STARBOARD just because of the chance of winning it anyday... Can downwind on my 16 any time i like and not win money for it..

Im not haveing a dig at you cammo or anything this is just my opinion

Oh and like has already been said im sure there is no problem paddleing on anyboard just wont be able to win prizes..

Don't leave it till the registration night to enter, it makes it hard for everyone involved. Send them in early then you can just go to registration night, pick up your showbag and have a drink...sweet!!

Yep... Peter will make the call on the Friday night at registrations and run the race either on the Saturday or Sunday depending on which day will have the best conditions.

If the weather is looking really bad, we will move the race to the river.
