Looking for my first Sup after paddling schools large starboard
on flat water

im 85kg
windsurfed for over 20 years
can surf ok ish

want it for 75% waves - beach breaks knee to shoulder\head high
also as a windsup

any recommendations from the starboard or fanatic line up?
allwave 9.2 or 8.10 or 9.6?
hero too wide?

I cut my teeth on a 9 ft 5" Starboard Widepoint and loved it, also Hero is fine and width could be your friend so don't worry about that too much and the hero actually turns ok due to the thinner rails. Rode a hire Hero in Bali in bigger waves than i should of been in !!!! it was actually OK

Allwave 9ft 2" could be a winner, stable and good in waves, bit heavy but robust, just wished they made a carbon version.


I think you would be fine on all three as your first wave board and it may come down to price and what's available locally.

I own a Hero and have surfed the 8'6" Allwave. The Allwave is better in the surf but at 70kgs both are too big for me to get any performance out of. I have since bought a smaller wave board and use the Hero for the family.

I would say the hero is going to be too wide especially if you are looking at surfing beach breaks.

At 85kg I think the 9'6 All Wave would be just on the too big side and the 9'2 would be on the money.

Depending on where you are in WA there are a couple of places in Perth that demo the Fanatics so try and get on one.

Id be thinking around the 8'10 Widepoint myself. I am mid 90s and the 8'10 is nice, stable and still lets you throw it around when needed.

I have an 8'10 Allwave. I was 98 kg when I got it ... plus full wetsuit.... no problem
I am 93 kg now... I could easily be on an 8'6

I think with your experience you would be happy with the 8'10. It should be comfortable for you now and is a board you can grow with.

I have windsurfed mine before and it was not bad... I'm not big into windsurfing but I had fun on it, plus I flat-water paddle it a lot... it pretty much does everything well.

Allwaves - probably the 8ft 10 would do you fine after you've got used to it....if you want a bit more ease all round and if you get a lot of mushy choppy windy type surfing conditions then 9ft 2.

Yes - good boards from what I hear but I have no experience of them.....but I would consider one for my next board. I think they work better in more pushy waves I hear and allwaves maybe better suited to crappier and good conditions...but that is just say so.

Thanks for all the feedback - managed to pick up a 2nd hand 9'2 all wave, carbon paddle, leash and board bag....now to get it wet!
