Goodmorning everyone.
First time posting here :)
As title says i've had plenty of experience on stand up paddle boards, always renting over in Hawaii and Florida (usually the nsp's), an avid surfer too. Decided to pull the trigger and finally buy my first one for home :)))) bit confused though on whats good or not..

Basically wanting to know if these (Supco, Sup Company) are any good? have not been able to find a great deal of information on them online but quite like the the wood look. Cruised around gumtree and they seem to be the $1000 mark. or is there a comparable brand i should check out first?

Supco are "okay". You will be getting what you pay for - But long term..I think most would agree that you wont be happy with the performance and durability - especially if you going to bash it around the surf. Most will advise you go for a more up market brand second hand... if you are looking at under 1k. Just had a quick squiz at the buy and sell.. saw quite a few options there.. including a couple of nice NSPs around 900 or so..... Dont get me wrong.. I got a lot of time for cheaper sups.... but from what you are telling us, you might be looking at getting something pretty specialized as a long term ride - and that is worth investing a few extra bucks in.Ultimate sup brand? SUNOVA! :D

It's hard to comment without knowing the boards dimentions and your height and weight..

I'm sure this board brand will be fine.. but if you get the chance you should definatly demo it before buying..

Then demo a major brand board and then decide if paying the extra is worth it..

Sometimes buying a second hand big brand is a better option than buying a cheaper brand new if they're about the same price..

Someone else here might know more about that board.

Just came across a company here in qld called ride the tide, similar price mark. anyone have one of these or heard anything positive/negative? They look like an old woody and i love that i can see a stringer! reminds me of my dads old mals

Havn't heard of them but they look great. I know a lot of places have demo boards. I have recently started and have a star board whopper. second hand, big wide and easy. its all about fun and you want a board that makes it easy in my humble opinion.

Great look ...doesn't look like it would be a throw around board in the surf ...but ...great first board with class ...the dark wood version looks cool .
maybe get that and a wave board later down the track ..JP or naish .have great wave boards .

Agree with the guys above.

Good entry board for flat water and some waves. Really depends on where you are planning to use it.

If you are an experienced surfer and want to use it in the surf, take the advise of the guys and get a demo. There is nothing better when you are starting off than getting good advise, either on Breeze here or from a guy in a shop. While you may save a few $ now on a board like this you will just end up buying another board down the track to suit your preferred style of SUP (flat water, surf, downwind).

Really suggest you take your time, see if you can get a demo, or ask a SUP rider in the surf for a couple of goes. Most guys would be happy to give you a crack.

There is a big difference like DJ says between these cheaper boards and the big name stuff. You can get some good 2nd hand boards. Both my JP surf SUP and Naish DW board were great buys 2nd hand.

The 2 boards you have up above are just cheap boards and should probably sell for $600 to $800 ish the timber look is cool its either paper or just a very thin veneer but there website says nothing about it so i would guess paper look( could be wrong) neither of the above will give you much performance.

Great time of year to buy as most places are clearing boards i know in our shop on the goldy you could get a new alwave for about the price as you want to spend!!

Called the guy up from the second place and he was pretty nice and honest, said they are from china, and a wood veneer, they are on sale for $850 and will give me the carbo shaft/wood paddle and a leggy and the fcs fins, so I'm pretty stoked about that. My bro-in-law and myself will buy 2 tomorrow, the 10', its 30 wide and 4 thick so better than the other i was looking at and just love the whole wooden look it has going on, on rails and all.

On a side note just so happened to go into a SUP shop today (while I'm down here in syd) and asked about where they're made, and everything is made in either china or thailand, the atxsups, nsp, even the $2400 tom carroll sups are made in asia, as are the bennett surfboard sups which is a real good name in the surf world. So not worried about where they're made anymore... However if you want to go all out get a proper wooden handmade sup in aus or usa its going to set you back $3000-$5000 !!!! no thanks lol i could buy a car for that lol

Don't want to dampen your enthusiasm for what you have chosen, but while you could read this forum for the next five weeks hours and learn a huge amount, I think I can summarize a few things:

The size of board you get should depend on your weight (heavier=more volume), height (taller=wider), skill level (beginner=wider/longer/more surface area=easier), and application (flat water or surf) - and your age/fitness comes into it as well.

If you are a good surfer, and you plan to surf on the sup, and you are keen (and have time to sup and live close enough to the water) and you don't have the bucks to keep buying new boards - then I would go shorter than 10'. I started at 10' - but I am 6'3", >50 years old, and was over 90 kg at the time - and within weeks I dropped to a 9'5" board (and after 8 months dropped to 8'8"). In your photo you are clearly fitter and younger (born in '87?) - so I would go shorter (but maybe a touch wider if you are tall).

If you plan to stay on flat water then longer and narrower is fine. Flat water is not my thing, but 10' x 30" is probably just fine.

I can't comment on the factories/quality, except that I understand that they do use different materials and technologies to differentiate brands and prices. I have always believed that you get what you pay for. My first 10' (cheap) board discolored (unevenly) quickly, and the FCS fin fittings were very dodgy. There are also some excellent Australian boards around - e.g. Deep. Good quality and your money stays in Aus.

Anyway, food for thought...

Hey sammy go 31 or 32 if you plan to surf it .( if they have one )..had a 30 ,found it tippy in the surf ..but good on flat .
i now have a 9.6 foot 32 wide ..170 litres ..great combo .(96 kg)

The board looks nice. I did the same as you but picked the Surfboard Warehouse after some research. And Jarrod gave me his recommendation. He was soooo right. There boards are top quality at the lowest price I know. Good luck with your purchase.

ended up getting a 9'8 coco mat i think they call it, 32 wide. It looked good and felt very pretty lite to me :)
complete backflip to what i was looking for but i really wanted one asap. i got it on sale too, i need to get a paddle though because it wasn't included but I'm happy with my purchase :)
