Hi
Looking at possibly replacing my Laird 9'6 Surfer with something similar.... Just wondering if anyone out there has experience on the LAIRD, the Sunova Style (preferably the 9'6) and the Naish Nalu 10' LE....I'm quite light (75Kg) so probably looking for the smaller option, the "Style"...but open to suggestions. Be keen to hear how they all compare.

I have the laird surfer which I'm pretty happy with, although haven't tried any other long board style sups. SUPBRO is the one to talk with. He had the lairds and now has a nalu which he seems pretty happy with. He might have even tried the style. Are you not keen on the laird anymore or do you just want to try something different

The Imagine Impact 9.8 is worth a look. I'm loving the 9.0 but it's more of a hybrid style where the 9.8 is more longboard style.

have you ever thought about a wide longboard? You're pretty lightweight with a little practice it is certainly possible. For example, I use this with lots o of fun

Sorry, I don't know why that image looks so different.

I have the Style 9'6x27.5
It's an excellent board. Perfect for cruisy point breaks.
The xxx construction is second to none, not a scratch on mine after 6 months of regular paddling.

Our Atlantis Runway is worth considering. I designed it over 12 months and even tweaked the final shape with Beau Young (2 x World Longboard Champ). The result is the perfect nose riding SUP that turns with ease.

Construction: EPS core with 5mm PVC stringer, PVC re-inforcement inserts for handle and fins
Deck: PVC full deck wrap (including rails) 4oz + 4oz + exposed aluminium infused carbon rails
Bottom: bamboo inlay + 4oz + 4oz

Currently on sale for only $750.

I am by no means a pro surfer but I am happy with the way this board went and have attached the Vid to demonstrate.
Hope this has been helpful.

You need to have a look at the fanatic stylemaster. 10' x 30" and 130 litres. I have one and love it. Not only is it a stunning looking board but it catches so many waves. Easy to paddle with skinny rails to make tight turns and perfect for old school nose riding if that's your thing

Hy i have had the Laird 9.6 and loved it, then i tried the sunova style 10.0 very good, fanatic 10.0 not bad
but the best performance sup in the 10.0 has got to be the Naish Nalu 10.0 LE IMO.

Performance wise second to none, very light, rides waves from 6 inches to overhead with ease

i ride as a quad most days just ticks all the boxes, enjoy what ever you get
cheers Mark.

Hi Treth

What are you looking for in the new board?
Do you want smaller with more performance?
Do you want to stay with the traditional Mal Noserider Styles?

Most of the boards mentioned above are about the 130L volume mark which I am guessing yours is similar.
At your weight you could go less volume.
I know volume isnt everything but most Mal Style performance boards are about the 130L mark any smaller and you are getting into the Hybrid Styles.

The other option is talk to a shaper and get one made to spec.

I havent ridden a Laird but have tried the Fanatic Style Master.
It is 10"x 30" and 135L volume. It is a beautiful looking board, nice plan shape, thin rails but there isnt much rocker. It has a domed deck which initially feels unusual but you get used to that and i feel it increases the stability. The board is very stable easy to paddle but you need to be on the tail to turn it.
For me I felt it needs a bit more rocker and that is half the problem, what suits me may be different to what you like. I am 80Kg and someone heavier and/or more skilled may find it easier to manoeuvre.

I hope to try a Naish Nalu LE.
It is 10'x 28 1/2" and 130L volume. It has a lot more rocker, the plan shape is a little different to a traditional Mal, it has a small bat tail and almost a hybrid nose, definitely not full and round like most noserider Mals. I will add some comments once I have ridden it.

My new custom style arrived yesterday 9'0 30" 124ltre surfed it for 3 hrs in 2-3ft perfect waves(what an initiation) cannot believe how good this board goes, took a few waves to find sweet spot rides high on the face, stalls easy so you can go for quick walk to the edge, how could you not be happy with that, its light and transfers from rail to rail when turning probably easier than my flow , allround best fun in a long while.Only down side is that wide nose looks weird when up front a bit like a door or an arched gate. This board feels so versatile its unlikely ill ride any thing else for awhile.Feel free to ask what i havent mentioned.Sunova seems like a fairly good fail safe option.

I had the same on my 10'6 Surfer, looks like a manufacturing issue and the foam is not too the shell and has a air space in the fine edge and like a egg shell it is frigile with out filling.

Only got mine back last week after it split over Christmas, Still a great board.

What I wanted as cheap as a pop out.

Thanks for all those great suggestions...I actually really like the Laird, but have had a couple of epic "longboard" sessions on the 9'6 Sunova recently and thought the narrower and less volume (112 vs 125 ltrs) of the "Style" made quite a difference with my lighter weight.
I hadn't thought about the idea of a wider prone longboard....will have to look into that.
The Nalu LE has had fantastic reviews but I want to go smaller and not larger...I had the old 10'6 X 28 Nalu and loved it, but it was way too big for me....I'm thinking 110 ish liters is about perfect for our waves and my ability (or lack of it). Also its a nice step down to my Raptor at 95 ltrs..
NZ seems to be a bit limited compared with the brands that you can get across the Tassie and our local shaper charges way more for one of his customs than I am prepared to pay...starting price is around $3500 NZ...so that is out. Guess I could approach an Aussie custom shaper, but not sure I want to get a board made that I'm not "involved" in during the process, as I find that half the fun. I do love some of the boards that have been shaped for guys on this site tho, jealous about how cheap and simple it all appears....So I guess I could do some further investigation along those lines...Freight to NZ tho?????
I will keep looking at options, so keep the ideas coming..
Thanks again

Hey guys.

I looked at Stylemaster in NZ. But at $3200, you could have a week on the Goldcoast, pick up a local custom or off the shelf, and still get back to NZ with board and change.

Another option.
