I am a SUP beginner and am looking to buy a board. I have been looking at the Naish Alana range but am unsure what size board I should be purchasing. I am 54kg and 168cm tall.

Any my help would be appreciated.

I would suggest the 9'5" Mana or the 10'6" Nalu in the Naish range and they both come in an Alana version.. The smaller 9'5" is my pick because it's more compact.. very stable.. and easy to carry and store than the longer 10'6" board.

The right board will depend on what it will be used mostly for.. Mostly surfing and some flat water paddling the Mana would be best but for mostly flat water paddling with some surfing the Nalu would be the better board... IMO..

Sorry I should have mentioned use. It will be predominately for flat water paddling, so I guess that would mean the 10'6?

Also if I did get the 10'6 I noticed the description recommended a maximum weight of 90kg. Does this mean my husband who is 95kg would not be able to use (I don't think he would often) or is this just a rough guide? Should I be looking at the 10'10 instead or is this not necessary?

I'm 95 kg and I've had a few 10'6" Nalu's over the years so he should be fine on it.. It will be fine for both of you.. I know quite a few women your size that paddle the 10'6" Nalu and they love it.. I think the 10'10" would be unessesary and a much bigger and heavier board to carry.

10,6 Nalu ..or Alana 10.6 ..would be a great chioce ..just different paint jobs.

i love my 11' Nalu ,my daughter has the 11.4 Nalu .she's 12 .but they all seem a little taller these days .
,they can do everything .surf to flat water .
great long board shape ..good quality boards.

Hi, it's been a few days but I'm hoping someone still checks this thread.

So I am still torn between the 9'5 or the 10'6 Alana. If I got the 10'6 would it be some that in the future I find too easy and risk the possibility of getting bored? Would my husband (95kg) be able to use the 9'5 or will he be too heavy?

Also I have just heard about each boards litreage, does anyone know the specs for these 2 boards?

They are both about the same in size (volume) at about 160 ltrs with the 9'5" being slightly bigger in volume.. I'm 95 kg and have no problem on my 9'5" Mana so your husband should be ok.. As long as it's not too choppy..

I reckon get the Mana.. It's for you not him..

So do you think the 9'5 over the 10'6? I am a beginner so I was originally thinking the 10'6 but will the 9'5 keep me more entertained in years to come?

And yes you're right, it is for me not him!

I've known a few girls your size that love their 9'5" Mana's.. You will find it easier to manage off the water than the longer 10'6".. It's more maneuverable and slightly more stable.. If you ever have a go at surfing little waves the Mana will be much easier for you than the 10'6" IMO

Hey i'm 172cm and 64Kg's and started on a 9'6 and loved it. Very stable but not too much board to carry around and lift onto the car.

Best to trial the boards if you can, as its a big outlay in $'s.

So I have been looking at the specs for both the 9'5 and 10'6 Alana and have noticed that they have different fin set ups? Does this make a huge difference in performance? Is one better than the other or do they both have their merits?

Hi bonnie ..if you are only flat water paddling you won't notice much difference ..at all..
the two side fins on the 9.5 is so you can ride higher on the face of the wave .
the three fins on the 9.5 will also make it more stable for you .its also is a wider board ..so easy ...
I also have two lady friends who have the 9.5 Alana s and they are over the moon with them ..easy to throw on the roof
short to carry ,and nice colours ...I don't think you will be sorry if you buy one ..I think it also will be easier for your husband to ride
being wider ..also the 9.5 will be easier to manoeuvre....it really is a great little board ..both are good .10.6 ,9.5 .
9.5 ..I think will be the easier of the two to ride and play ..

I'm going to throw another spanner in the works here... If I decided to get the 10'6 would my 1 year old boy be able to ride with me? (he is currently 12kg). This is not a make or break situation as I have my heart set on one of these two boards so if he cannot then I will still choose one of them and he will just have to float around in the water with my husband.

Also I have a small frame and narrow shoulders, do you think the width of the 9'5 would still be ok for me if that was the board I decided on?

Hi Bonnie, my partner and I have 10'6" BIC Sport ACETEC boards. They would easily carry your boy and yourself.
We bought them from Adelaide canoe works in a package with leash and paddles. Strong and durable, these boards dont get talked about on seabreeze very often but they're off high quality.

Yeah ..you probably would ..it can be done . Both will handle 90-95 kg.

i find it very difficult paddling with someone on the front ..it means you have to stand further up the back ..maybe the 10.6 would be better if this is in mind ..it will give you a longer board ...don't go out too deep without a life jacket on him .I'm sure he would love it being paddled around .

both will be fine for you ..see if you can have a quick demo ..on one or something similar in width .

How big (height / weight) are you and your partner? I think I just need reassurance that the 10'6 won't be too big for me.

I'm 90kgs 5'9" and my partner is 59kgs around 5'5"- 6"ish.. We use them primarily as flatwater boards but they're fun in small surf. Daniele has actually started to catch small waves on it now.

Just wondering what you ended up going with? I'm in Adelaide and just starting to look around for a board for a beginner -I'm 175 cm, 68 kgs and looking for something to use mainly on flat water but would like something that could be used in small surf once I work it out :) I'd be keen to hear your thoughts and any recs about where to go for a look.
