Hi All,

I'm interested in a new sub 9' SUP primarily for surfing beach breaks. Currently ride a 9' 1" AW, which is great but when she gets hollow I find it slides out in critical sections.

I'm 100kg, and like the volume on the AW but wondered if I went down in size, would it be very noticeable? Looking to drop down to near 130-140 litres.

I ride every day, and hardly ever miss waves... So thinking am I stepping down to much?

My options are:
Naish 8' 8" Hokua X32 LE
Fanatic 8???11??? AllWave
Starboard 8' 10" Wide Point
JP 8' 8" Surf Wide Body

Cheers

JB

Im not far off your weight. If you want to get into it a bit.. then you could look at the 8'10 pro wave, 8"10 jp pro, the new 8'3 hokua wide, any of the boards around 120L will be ok, just depends on your type of waves and your skills.

If you surf fatter summer style waves, the boards you listed are good choices....if steeper punchy waves, id look look at around an 8"10 x 29 ish. that seems to be ok for me unless its really crappy conditions. good luck.

Thanks for that, its mostly summer stuff, I still shortboard but SUP surfing is so much easier, and allows you to scout the whole beach, and not just clog up the one spot.

I noticed with the AW, that they really excel in the "soft" stuff but when it ramps up a bit and starts getting hollow, I dont feel in control of the board.

Wow, 120L... perhaps I should start doing more cardio haha :)

All terrific boards. I found some Larger Side Fins coupled with a ball bearing adjustable 8" fin stopped the sliding out on the old fish shaped 9'2" Allwave. It's still a tad slow for making the hollow sections but great in chop or side shore winds. I bought an 8'10" x 31" Custom (Laguna Bay) and am very happy. In Qld they have a heap of great shapers such as TSJ and DC, in NSW DTM and DEEP in Victoria Stonker and Trigger Bros. There are heaps around if you want to check out options No disrespect meant to anyone!! Gotta say the new 9'1" Hokua looks nice

I have a pair of future robber fins I could slip in but need a bigger centre than the standard fin. I love the AW it's a good board for progressing and it's hard to give up because it's just so much fun. Tough as old boots too :)

I have thought about a custom, not sure how much they cost and how we'll they retain their value. I guess customs are harder to sell if you upgrade. Like the Chapman boards and have seen the DTM clips. Would you need specialised sup shapers or could the local short board maker sort this out?

I've heard a few stories about the JP and Naish boards not being as durable... Being a heavy sucker I want something a little resilient to my hooves haha

That's Leroy, awesome thank you :)

Mate , I'm 92 kg and went to the pro wave 8'10 and found it to be a great board . BUT , ordered a dtm and have one on order , fingers crossed just in time for chrissy .

My point is , learn what you can handle , in length , litres , etc , then have a go at a custom . I'm frothin on this dtm .

Demo, Demo, Demo! Best part about SUP is try before you buy. Love my 8 8 JP Wide body. Look my topic up on t. Had one nearly a year now and absolutely no regrets, well maybe one. Don't get out enough!

I rode an 8'5 x 29 at 109L this morning. in pretty lumpy sideshore. It surfed really well. Made me think I may need to change my boards over.... great summer board.

Wow skebstebamal, thats impressive, what do you normally ride? What fins are you riding? The reason I stepped off a shortie, and on to a SUP was I dont surf the shortboard enough, and living in a very popular spot, its dog eat dog world... So now being on a SUP, I wanted the performance of the shortie but still keep the wave count up.

Not sure if dropping 30 litres is a drama or not but wouldnt mind demo some of the new Hokua X32 etc...

Also look at 8'5" Naish Mana or Starboard Pocket Rocket. Both 130 litres and get good raps.

Good luck.
