Hey All

Had a nice session at one of my locals on saturday, Godrevy in Cornwall UK, on the Sunova Flow 8' 1" x 28 1/2 x 4 1/8 @ 101L and then flipped to the Style 9`6 x 27 @ 112L after a few hours as the waves got weaker. Great 2 board quiver - Shredder and Longboard - Happy days

I was writing a proper old review of greatness and managed to delete it, **ck so will have another go later but for now

Nice recognisable easy day vid, love those spots. We spend lots of holidays there :)2 questions about it.What is your weight? Because what for a 60kg person a big board is, is for a heavier boned small.Why did you choose the Flow instead of the Acid? Especially Godvrey and Gwithian have some pretty punchy days where the Acid might shine brighter or is the Flow potent enough to manage such days?

Hi, I am 75kg so 80 kg wet weight. I have an Acid 8`4 as well which is at another level. the 8`1 Flow and 8`4 Acid ave a similar surface area and volume, The Acid has a full on rocker so makes the bioard twitchy but amazing fun on days like Saturday, smashes the lip vertically :o) whereas the Flow is a bit wider and with a flatter rocker is pretty darn stable.

As it turns out the Acid would have been better for that particular day as in hardly any chop etc but as an all round top perfromance board the Flow nails all size waves so very well. The Acid tops out at head and half as finds it difficult to bury the rail and feels skittish hence the Insane and another on the way sshhhh :o)) Up to head an a half the Acid is superb so if your ready and tenancious then the Acid is great.

The Flow is more planted in head plus and still has a nice sharp turn to it for sure and really rides / pumps well from the middle so is a great boad for begiiner plus / intermediates ( www.standuppaddleboarder.co.uk/whats-your-sup-surf-level/ ) board for this very reason ie: agility on the board comes with practise prior to that static positioniong is probable hence why the Flow can be an easier board for static riders in the 8`7 to 9`2 bracket.

I am surprised the 8'4 Acid 'tops out' and head and a half? I would have thought the Acid could handle double head+ easily. I'd look at changing the fin set up on the Acid in bigger waves i.e bigger/smaller/flexier/stiffer etc before ordering a dedicated big wave board like the Insane. I know Godrevy, The Bluff and Gwithian very well and reckon the Acid would ideal for the bigger days.

I agree with Stev0 - IMO the Acid can realistically handle anything us mere mortals can throw at it & as always, fin selection is critical

Maybe a slighly bogger fins set up, thinking about it head and a half is a fair size butactually the Acid does excel here, its just on proper drops on bigger waves , maybe my wave size is wrong, either way I know that on a BIG wave and when your charging the Acid is skittish, I have been there too many times not to know.

Dunno guys, recon my wave size explanation is wrong, head to head and a half yes the ACid is very much on fire but put it this way I have taken the Acid into some pretty sizeable waves and when your charging this is what the Acid does, gets skittish, I will try bigger fins but that isnt the issue. You must kniow a board with a fair amount of rocker will turn like a dream b4 u know it but does have this inherent characteristic.

hence the reason for boards like the insane.

SunovaUK - there's no denying there are superior big wave boards vs both the Acid & Flow (e.g. the Insane or JL Bombora series...to mention a couple) & yes, the Acid can get a little skittish if it's choppy but in saying that, I still think the overall refinement of the Acid (e.g. more of a 'pin' tail vs the Flow) gives it the edge in big surf...as you say, maybe our definition of big surf is where the issue lies?

I think the general perception that the Acid is a non-user friendly shape is a bit unfair because sure, it does have some idiosyncrasies (a bit skittish / not the worlds most stable board nor the fastest paddler...find me a performance board that doesn't have these traits) but they are a small price to pay in terms of the overall performance the board delivers.

PS - for the record, I own an 8'11 Insane (slightly reduced rocker / way less width so more parallel rails vs the Acid) so I'm agreeing with you about what's required for a dedicated big wave board
