We have had waves almost every day for a month.
Typical summer stuff... waist to chest and clean. I set up a video cam on the beach a few days to get some shots of my 8'10 Sunova Speeed in action. It is such a fun board.... everything I had hoped for.... it is so smooth and snappy in all size surf.

I am spoiled by this board... I'm starting to sell off my quiver. Last Monday, I set up the cam on a big, lumpy dawn patrol.... no one out... so I guessed at the line-up..... Wrong!!! I missed the whole session :o ;D ;D

It's an imperfect science.... but I get a lot of great vids of everyone thats surfing.... I'm making a Cape Cod Movie with them. The view is from 400 yard down the beach.... looking into the waves from the side..

Interesting view, because you are surfing towards the camera, you don't get any feeling of the down the line speed. Kinda like watching a train come towards you.

But... it's the only way to capture the action with a fixed, unmanned camera.Here's my summer on Speeed:

Those look like some really fun waves, I could handle a month of that!!

You have really nice flow on that speeed you can see the board doesn't have any of the drag that wider more curved sups sometimes have

I agree Jacob.... yesterday I water-swapped with a friend.
He had a new very sweet custom. 8'8 x 31 at 123 liters..... nicely foiled rails, pointy nose, chine rails, super light.... a bit fuller in the hips, but very solid looking design.
I couldn't wait to try it.The first turn slowed half way through.... it didn't carry the speed out of the turn.
It took me several waves to get a rhythm going.... but even with a solid pump going down the line, it felt dull compared to the Speeed.

I compared the videos in the same session, and there was a very noticeable difference between the Speeed and the custom. Speeed wins... no contest.

STC - you still need to reserve a spot in your quiver for the Style so don't spend too much time on the nose of your Speeed

i love the tapered tail of the Speeed, but watching it (specifically the 8'10"), I always get the feeling i want to chop off about 1 foot from the front of it. it looks like it turns plenty well and i know the front end is very thin, but still that feeling arises. i wonder how that board would do with all the same design and dimensions (width, thickness) but just remove a foot in the front and make it a 7'10"? i know they have shorter ones, but 29" width is as narrow as i'd want to go. but yeah, i'm sure Bert Burger knows a helluva lot more about this than i do, and there's probably a good reason there is no 7'10"*29" at about 115l.

People say that it looks like a bigger board..... but the reality is.... it turns way faster, tighter than my buddies shorter, pointy nose boards.
If the nose was cut off.... I wouldn't be able to paddle it....I'm 67 and weigh 100 kg..... I have ridden much smaller boards, but I lose drive and get a chippy feel.... the Speeed has such easy drive and carve, there is no reason to go smaller and torment myself.
Look at some of the turns in the video.... particularly at 1:52 to 1:55
I included that wave because it shows how easily you can throw the nose around, 2 quick turns on a weak wave.... faster than other boards I have ridden.

That nose makes it the best board I have ever had for catching waves.... I simply step forward, lean on the nose and paddle in way earlier than my other boards.

For winter conditions, I will actually go bigger.

Well Sup the after watching youre vid many times and reading all the posts i finally did it ,lashed out and bought the 8.10 speed. My last dig was the 8.3 Hokua x32 but whilst it was fun i felt there something missing for me.I kept thinking yeah i want something that turns like the Hokua but with more of an overall longboard feel,tough ask and probably dreaming but after my first session out front of home today on the speed im pretty bloody happy i tell you.The waves here are not unlike your summer fun vid so your surfing of the speed caught my attention .Todays conditions were stiff offshore with half to one metre shifting peaks but we do have a right hand point at west end of beach that offers softish high tide peelers and guess what no one out today.It proved the perfect intro ride for me as ive ridden many sups there in todays small type conditions. From the very first take off i knew i was going to like this board.all the things you mentioned were evident but the most notable was the surge of speed i felt when i put the foot down;Incredible.I did catch the front corners a couple of times on late drops and the odd steeper section i think it was more a technique glitch than the board.I was able to throw my 84 kilos into acouple of turns and the speed felt fantastic.I started to fall of a little as the wind kicked in and fatigue set in but generally the stability felt good.The glide of the board feels great when paddleing and i could really feel the board hold onto the face as opposed to my allwave that definately surfs above the water with its bulky rails.I also noticed i could chase waves down with me positioned well forward of centre.So ive only had 3 hours on the speed but im thinking its going to be great for a 55 year old longboarder still trying to improve.Id like to thank you Sup the for the heads up and posting the vid and all other seabreezers that have posted info re the Sunovas and seeing as you Sup seem to be able to make the years stand still with youre smooth style and endless energy.I reckon i got 12 years to catch you in those departments.Thanks again regards Richie at Phillip Island Victoria Aust.

Great to see the enthusiasm! It sure is a fun board, and there is no doubt about the extra speed you get on that board.

I have caught that front "corner" of the board a couple of times - I have had to adjust my technique a little.

If I bury the nose on a steep drop, I "just hang in" with confidence.... knowing that the kick in the nose will surf it back up!

Well gents second sesh on the speed in epicpoint conditions today with long quick sections at around head high on sets.Stiff offshore making sections tricky to say the least.Suns out all good you would say but i did have to share the break with my trusty mate Macca on his faithfull ole SB8.10 wide point.An excellent chance to do some comparing and watching of the speed as it smoked down the point towards me.Firstly Macca had not ridden the speed so i was very interested in his initial reaction,funny twas same as mine, something along the lines of HOLY SCMITD,this is insane.Hm about then i was thinking probably should have had a few more myself before handing over.Ive ridden heaps of boards in this lenghth and volume range but the speed is in another statosphere for its size.It responds and squirts out of all types of situations with ease.We both commented on how easily it paddles from stop to wave catching speed,quite effortless and in a fresh offy as well.Aother notable was the fact you can chase down stubborn waves well forward and it just keeps accelerating till your on.I fear for Maccas old WP as great as its been over the years,cause he had that glazed look in his eye when he handed back as if to say where do i sign and i might have to leave it at youre house for a while Rich as hes not long purchased the Hokua x32,Im sure the addicted sup riders get what i mean.My basements okay as ther are already over 100 collectables in there so nothing stands out.So seriously now this Sunova 8.10 speed is really thrilling me and once again throwing down a challenge to keep improving,great board.

Hey STC, why you want another winter board? Do you think the speeed won't do it in heavier waves? Or is it because you need to have more sunova boards ???

sas.... it will absolutely handle anything I encounter size wise... it has already proven that to me in 2 x OH.
it's because the 8'10 is on my low side..... I am 100 kg on 130 liters..... when I don the dreaded 5 mil winter gear and all the added trials of sub-freezing conditions, it would be nice to have a bit more comfort. I have ridden in easily in a 3/2 full suit, but our winter is a nasty animal.

That... and I would love to have more Sunova boards

whats your experience with the speeed in more chaotic conditions?

Hi Sas if i might be cheeky enough to chime in on Sup The Creeks party. I couldnt resist another go out the front of home after my last post and i experienced slightly different conditions on a light seabreeze and low tide.I had a slight wobble coming off the point due to conditions and did find myself in the drink more than expected,but could have been due to fatigue due to 2 solid days of speed stoke.I have yet to try chaotic conditions and would probably opt for a surf on mal or shorty if desperate to get in.I realize we are pretty lucky to have options in differing conditions as not all do.My early opinion and i stress early is that this board is worth the odd tricky session condition wise as im certain its going to deliver when the planets line up.At 130 ltrs and 8.10 its still a fair lump of craft its just when conditions are good it performs at a level for its size ive not experienced before.If not for STC creeks video i would never have considered this shape or style of board but im so glad i watched the vision.So im not sure if this is any help cause youre chaotic conditions could be way beyond anything ive been in.I check in at 180cm and 84 kilos and some would say i should be going shorter but this thing is so much fun and im good with that.Regards and good luck Richie

I spent the last month on my new longboard SUP. It is quite narrow and a bit challenging when there's a lot of chop (gong incredible ten 25 wide/ my stats 136 lbs by 5'7). But I like its narrowness and not every board need to be easy. Last week I spent some time on a gong 8'1 cloud (30 wide) and fanatic ProWave 9'3 (31 wide) they are much more stable but also quite slow. The speeed seems to have the best of both. Narrowness for speed and comfort (cause I like it ) and reduced length for more radical moves (and a bit of rocker compared to my longboard). In my mind it seems to be right board. Only thing I'm not for sure is which size to choose. From volume the 8'5 seems to be perfect. But the new 8'8 by 123l would add a bit width for the chop and more length for easy paddling and catching waves. The waves of your videos are rare where I surf mostly there is many water moving in 5-6 seconds 8 to 20 knots sideshore with 3 to 6 foot chaotic beachies.

Hi sas.... I'm on a road trip, so not on the computer much at the moment.

in chaotic conditions, the Speeed is up to the task, if I am. If I am strong and fresh, I can handle most conditions about the same..... when I get tired or injured, it gets a lot more difficult. I will need something a tad bigger for winter unless I lose 25 lbs.....
