Hello all okay this is a question for big guys, whopper extra or avanti, surfing beach break much difference, in board surfing?yes the avanti is longer, quite light board for its size. Or whopper extra as they are same width, which would you choose?

As a big guy who researched extensively and tried out the Avanti, I would go with the Fanatic Fly 11'6. That is what I bought and I absolutely love it. It is incredibly stable in choppy conditions. I demoed the Avanti (which I was very close to buying) and felt that it was too wide. In my opinion, you really feel that width, and on flat water it felt slow. While it was one of the most stable boards I have been on, I still think the 11'6 Fly is not far off stability wise and will go better on flat water as well. I haven't been on a Whopper so can't comment on that board.

Ok, you could also look at the 9'10 fanatic Allwave or 10'8 x 34 JP Fusion...these boards are also endorsed by big boys on here (blokes your size and bigger) . Unless you're severely balance- challenged you probably don't need to go much wider than 33" or 34".

+1 on the JP Fusion 10'8 x 34. I have also demoed that board a couple of times and really liked it. I had the Fly on order at those times or I might have given it some serious thought. I know HC also tried it out at the same event and I think he liked it, which would explain his putting it out there for you to look at.

I'm the same weight as you and 2 x hip replacements my first board was an Avanti loved it great in surf for its size Moved down to the whopper 34" more for the surf. Sold the Avanti in a week moment to a friend and have since sold the whooper and now have a JP 10'8" fusion best big board I've ridden supper stable and good in surf and flat water, if your back is real bad go the Avanti at 36" I'm glad I had it as my first board and if I had my time over again I would still buy the Avanti. If you back is not to bad the JP is super stable and will take you further as you get better hope this helps

10'8 Cabrianah (10'8 Fusion before JP merged)
9'10 Allwave

I was 129 k when I started on the Avanti... 120 k on the others ...(97 now... thanks to SUP)

Avanti surfed incredibly well... even in well OH, for such a huge board. I loved it...
BUT... it is dangerous! I was hit sooo many times, because I couldn't get clear of it... too long.

I 10'8 was ok in surf and flat-water... but you can't get near the nose... too much belly under the nose

The 9'10 Allwave will be AS stable as the 10'8... but surf much looser and noseride well. Really nice in flat-water as well. Super strong build.

I think the 9'10 Allwave will suit you very well... plus smallest of the 3... so easier on your back

What SUP the creek said but the JP- I had the Avanti and JP...........the JP wins hands down..........if you can try to get the pro edition.....you will appreciate the drop in weight and saving on your back.....

Not actually surfed the Allwave but all those that have that i know say the rails are too fat...........

Adam here; I'm in a similar boat. Currently surfing a china special, at 10'6 and 177 litres.

Nice but looking to get a more serious board. I'm still very much a beginner in the surf but I'm LOVING it! Looking for stability mostly - to help with confidence and support after 3-4 hours in the surf.

Am 95 kilos and just on 6 foot.

My short list has the Allwave 9'10 (or 9'5) - am also considering the Naish equivalent...... Mana 9'5......

Currently the board I'm on is 10'6 x 32 x 4 1/2. It isn't super stable but us IS heavy! I'm thinking do the name boards have BETTER stability in the smaller sizes/specs?

Thoughts?

I had the 9'10 & 9'6 Allwave for a year... I mostly surfed my 9'6 and used the 9'10 in flat-water... it surfed well, but the 9'6 was noticeably better in surf.

I currently have a 2013 Naish Mana 9'5.

I think the 9'6 Allwave and 9'5 Mana are great boards... they both surf really well and are very stable.

difference:

I would surf the Allwave in any kind of surf... the Mana doesn't get used over 5'

The Allwave HRS construction is bulletproof... I trust it.

I REALLY like my Mana in small mushy waves... it is VERY easy to turn and rip in marginal conditions.
The Allwave has more depth and durability

depends where and how you ride... neither one will disappoint you.

hello all,the allwave and jp 10'8 sounds like the go, as most have said, i dont feel like getting thumped by a big board ouch,,, i will try and demo them,i had a whopper before but was a bit to heavy, rode waves very well, but my balance,, slightest chop on the water i was buggered. so i have a fanatic fly 11,6 catches waves easy, but very hard to turn on a wave, so the avanti seemed to be more a BIG board and could ride waves, shops were saying this is your board. its lighter than my fanatic, But still a big board.. so your suggestions allwave, and jp 10'8 sounds good advice,

Have heard many, many good things about the AllWave series. In fact that's where a reputable surf shop was pointing me (and they carry almost everything!).

Apologies to all for hijacking the thread but it seemed in a very similar vein. To the OP in particular, best of luck mate! We're very lucky to have such a broad choice.
