Has anyone seen this new design for the shark shield? Basically sticker decals under your board attached via electronic stickers along the rail into the unit under the kick pad of your board?

According to the website they ship in July this year. is anyone considering getting one i am seriously thinking of one myself considering the recent shark attack on the young bloke off Bombo beach on the south coast recently.

Do they work on seals they are getting rather fat and big here

I wish they did work on seals. I had one jump at me last winter i think it was going for my paddle all i saw was a grunting black shadow thought my time was up lol...we were surfing around a few lobster traps perhaps he was being territorial. Worth the investment when they release it i say

Last summer, up and down the relatively short area of the Outer Banks of North Carolina , we had 11 shark attacks. We're in the water everyday so I ordered some "Noshark" devices from www.bluvand.com. They are designed to start making the shark uncomfortable at roughly 7 meters, and the discomfort is supposed to become unbearable for the shark at about 3.5 meters. I have been using the Freedom 7 for spearfishing for about 4 years now. I am still here.

You get about 4-6 hours use on a charge. Oh you get a cheap thrill if you touch the antenna.

That ankle band looks interesting seemed to work good on that video..I wonder how it would work for a SUP board with your ankle out of the water most of the time? I will have to see if they are available in Australia thanks for that mate...

While you were using the Freedom 7 for spearfishing did you have any close encounters that you observed with a shark? thanks

I've been kayak fishing with a freedom 7 for a couple of years. Had no encounters myself but know of plenty of guys that have tested them on hooked or just curious sharks. The sharks do not like them at all and react instantly when turned on.

One guy up north was very pleased to have his on when 5m GWS circled for 20 mins but would not come within about 10ft of him. They normally have habit of coming up and giving kayakers a wake up nudge and curious chew on rudder.

The "NoShark" is out of the water unless you're riding a board with low liters. I asked that same question when I bought the device, and was told it activates the instant you hit the water. The Bluvand folks said if you fell in due to a shark bump, that the shark would receive a tremendous wallop as your ankle hit the water. He said his main concern wasn't a bite, but injury from the shark thrashing as it tried to get away.
It seems to me that having the deterrent on the bottom of the board is a good solution, but I'd like to know more about the range of that device. The Bluvand one is supposed to be the strongest, with the biggest range. Also, as it only activates when you hit the water, a single charge lasts for multiple surf sessions. It's an easy solution for piece of mind, just throw it on your ankle and go.

I have not seen any. However, the water we dive in is not always clear. It puts one at ease thats for sure.

Shark Shield is of interest and from many reports its about 90% effective.
My question is the 90% could possibly be just the inquisitive sharks that are detered while the 10% are the sharks that were going in for real regardless?
I agree it is a comfort to deter any sharks but will this system prevent a highly motivated attack?
So is the investment worth it just for comfort value?
Does anyone have experience in a full on highly motivated shark attack being avoided with these systems?

It would be interesting to know that 10 % factor..I cant say if it would be effective for the shark that wants your leg on a plate but from viewing those great white shark attacks on seals etc they seem to come from the deep and hit from the bottom..i reckon surfing beach breaks etc great whites would not be able to do that sort of attack due to the depth of the water it would be more of a straight line attack in my opinion..i don't think it would stop a large shark coming at speed from the bottom but that's just my opinion. 90% is better than 0% but...cheers
