I've just bought a new prone surf board and did it with the intention of potentially using it as a step down SUP surf board. It's a 9' catch surf log and at 98 litres I can stand up fairly well on it. I'll try it with a paddle next to see how it goes, but in concept it's not a million miles away from the Sunova Revolution et al.
Anyone else done similar?

Haddock,I'm doing similar but different ,being older I'm not enjoying strong winds on my short sups or w/end crowds,so i bought a narrow longboard sup 26 in wide for xtra stability to prone longboard,so I could knee paddle into waves ( I lost my pop up years ago) the main reason I got into sup in the first place. And it worked,im now going to a narrower longboard to see if that works! For me it's about being in the water ! Being on a sup is still my priority but there is a freedom in mucking around with the kids and learners at our novelty breaks,just pure fun,without the intensity of a sup to worry about,or the way it is accepted at a break !

Yes, with my 100kg I used my 84 liters 9'1" x 23.5" longboard for SUP training on flat days.

The challenge to SUP it is quite intense, and very fun. A very good balance and cardio training.
However I did not attempt to use it in waves.

I tried a 100l 10' longboard, and it was doable, even in waves.

I managed 5 years ago to use a 84 liters SUP in waves however. A 7'10" x 27 3/4 x 84l Imagine of a guy I switched boards with on the spot.
I could only stay 10 seconds standing before falling. So I only stood up just before an incoming wave. I managed 3 waves this way, but I must say I did not see any advantage to it: I was so mentally and physically exhausted once on the waves that I could not do much on it...

Given that I can stand without a paddle on my longboard, I figure that with a paddle, I should be able to make it work in clean conditions. I would expect a bit more glide and speed once on the wave than my regular SUP, but will have to give it a go to see if I find any benefit in doing this.

I also enjoy being able to knee paddle out through the lineup and prone surf into some really gutless waves, although my pop up certainly could do with some polishing!!!

I am hoping that the challenge Colas experienced will translate to more comfort on my SUP and a more delicate approach to foot placement.

Ah I have a video: (the last wave on a 10' "Incredible Ten" surfboard).
I was walking on eggs as it was my first session on such narrow low volume boards, and I was intimidated by the 30knts+ wind and urchins-covered rock bottom, as I only get out in glassy conditions on sand bottoms...



The Master was more at ease :-)

Something I've thought about for fun. One of my go-to SUP longboards is a 9-0 x 27 at 100L, so it probably wouldn't be that much different. Although I recently prone surfed on an 8' Odyssey (first time on a foamy), and it felt like a wet noodle compared to a hard board.

Yea mate, the opposite for me I bought a Deep JC pro at 110 lt 10"x26 SUP I can prone surf on, really cruises on tiny days, beutiful nose rider I can knee paddle out or prone paddle, though I mostly SUP on glassy smooth conditions otherwise at my age 61yrs and 84kgs i have the best of both worlds, my intention was to SUP surf it but out of curiosity and choppy day I decided to prone surf it, now it's a perfect one board all rounder. Helps that I longboarded for over thirty plus years before switching to SUP, so transition was really easy...

We've got an old 10' Epoxy Bic longboard, it's a Bob Pearson design from close to 20 years ago. When I'm feeling on my game I sup surf it and really have fun. The domed deck takes a little getting used to but it's certainly a challenge and so satisfying catching waves on it. 79 L and 23 3/4" wide. I'm 64kg so it's actually not crazy stability wise.

If you can get one for a reasonable price you can always sell it if it's too tricky to SUP - or just surf it!

I tried to get a Catchsurf Log for fam, with same idea of SUP'ing it, but couldn't find in stock locally. Instead I got some Wavestorm Taquito SUP's on Craigslist that I think are 7' 80L, they go for like $20 and are actually incredible for kids. Kind of a fun taste of what being on a tiny board might be like, pop up in surf stance (cheat by getting momentum first in shallow water) and paddle in a circle for 10s before sinking again.
