Colas,
Whats your opinion of these types of boards, that is the L41, for big pumping waves that we get over here in Australia? Do you think they could handle 6 foot plus faces with late take offs?
Well, I never rode a L41, and never went to Australia, so understand that I cannot really answer this question :-)
What I can say is that my experience at Hossegor with similar shapes boards on pumping (but not big, head high max) has been:
- as long as there is some way to get some angle on the take off, take off is not that harder. Quite commited, but doable. If the wave hollows, slab-like, ... it was definitively not in my league :-)
- the first problem is the bottom turn, you must prepare well and take your time to position your feet... otherwise, spin out...
- for zipping along the sections, they will be fine. However, they will not be adapted to vertical surfing in the pocket, the top turn especially does not dissipate speed but accelerate, a scary prospect in hollow powerful waves.
- the shorter the board, the more critical the positioning on take off, but the better the "survivability" to hairy (late take offs) situations.
- you must have a board geared for speed: not too rounded outline, otherwise it may squirrel / bog down.
I guess I would be willing to try anyways, but with a friendly set up (sand bottom :-)
