I am just seeking opinions from members in regards to choosing either of the above boards. I am looking at getting a 9'x28 Revolution @115 litres or 9'2"x28"hipster twin Longboard @120litres. I am 70 kg and 170 cm intermediate Sup surfer. I have a 10'x29" Starboard longboard which is great board and has improved my Supping greatly. I have been considering downsizing to a 9 footer as easier to carry around and want to improve my longboard Sup surfing. I spend most of my surf time at a local reef break which is protected inside a bay so no big powerful surf, mostly a longboarders wave. I would appreciate info from those members who have/had both and which would be a more suitable board for me if I decided to go ahead with purchasing one. Cheers

Both good boards from what a I can tell, I have a Smik on the way and I think it will be a winner but the difference between both, it's all about what you look for. I go for the look of a board, if it looks great and meets the criteria I go for that, both well built but I have heard the Hipster is very loose on the turns.

Lizard man,I have owned A 10x 28 revolution,and a 9.2 x28 longboard twin,and have moved both on ! I love riding new designs so I'm constantly changing boards.IMO, although my rev was 10x28 the constant with this design is a VERY wide nose,even the 9x28. 23" @ 1 ft back !it definitely
makes noseriding easier,and the back end has great performance as well,a very balanced HP design.although I prefer a longboard box for a 2+1 set up. The Smik hipster twin isa very different gig for instance the nose measurement is approximately 20.5 to 21 ,a lot more pulled in but still noserides well enough,but the tail performance is where it stands out!,be aware that you have to get back on both designs for there intended purpose,more so on the Smik ,the revolution you can surf a little bit more forward ,remembering they are longboard designs you will need to be on it with foot work !,both boards are lightish but the Smik construction / carbon / pvc ect,it's definitely lighter,both boards will go in weaker waves /and powerful waves,I'm 75 kg 69 yo my summary, sunova a nose rider you can surf of the tail with ,Smik a more performance short board style that noserides very well! My final input is BOTH will be better than the Starboard as I have had one of those too and it did not last long ,moved it on very quickly.I hope this helps in some way and please keep in mind this IMO.Good luck with your decision.

Hey Lizardman, SUPboarder magazine did quite an in depth review of longboards recently. Including both boards you are looking at. FYI the revolution won the award with the starby runner up and smik in 3rd place....(from memory).

Both are great Aussie brands and get plenty of positive froth on seabreeze. I recon either way you will be pretty happy with your choice.

Cheers guys for your input, though it would seem a very close race between both boards. I am slightly favouring the Revolution as it seems to be more suitable to surfing in crappy conditions. The only drawback is the fin set up as I think a 2+1 would be better and it is only 115 litres but from forum posts the Revolution is very stable and feels like more volume than stated. I am looking for a board that will be a long term keeper so if I spend the money hopefully it will be suitable for my needs. I might get one for a Xmas present to myself but in no hurry really.

It is not a problem to order your Revolution with a US box (2+1) set up. It is what I did. Very small extra cost. I have been running it as a single fin (the 8" cutaway) that came with the board and enjoying the rides. It is a beautiful fin. The board has fine rails that seem to like taking a high line on the waves.

I owned a revolution 9 footer and used a hipster,I agree with just add water it is way to wide in the nose, super stable though, great construction higher swing weight than hipster both great boards but I would definitely consider a kalama performance I'm personally enjoying it more than anything else I've ridden, just another option if available

I have a 10 x 28 revolution, and a 9 x 28 smik hipster longboard. Around the same volume. Chalk and cheese.
I had the stock revo, and have since gone for a xxx tec one, with 2 + 1 fin set up. It is slightly heavier but this increases the glide. It is beautiful to look at, the rails are fine and sits perfectly in the water for me. I absolutely love this board, and currently surfing it as a single using a 9" fluid foils fatboy. James Casey says the thruster is the go, but he rips and could probably make surfing a door look good. For me it's a keeper, and currently doing a 9 x 30" one xxx tec with 2 + 1. I love running to the nose on this board, also turns well off the tail but I am large and need some decent push or she bogs. My boy has prone surfed it and was releasing many excited expletives afterwards, it is scary fast on a decent face as a single.
The hipster longboard is exciting off the tail, and carves on wally stuff. Not as good on the nose, but all the magic is in the tail on this board.
I surf it with Asher Pacey twins or an 8" single. Turns on a dime with some weight on the tail as a twin, and fun and squirrely following sections with ease as a single. There are 3 reasons I will never sell this board. It is too much fun, it has my daughter's artwork on it, and it has been that bashed about heaps in and out of the water, and probably wouldn't fetch much.

Yes mate, I tossed up between the 9 x 28 and the 9 x 30 for a long time, but in the end the volume won me over. 127L is perfect for my dimensions and my ability, and comfort is beginning to become more important than living on that fine line. I'm 100% sure I'm going to love it

I second that, I have the 9x30 revolution at 98kegs its awesome.

These are both great boards and I have one of each. Smik better off the tail, revolution better on the nose. Smik carbon lighter. Pretty much as everyone else has said! Not often you get so much agreement on a forum.

On Supboardermag.com there has been an excellent LongSup Test in recent months with the Sunova Revolution and the Smik Style Lord in Test, which would be the Smik most comparable to the Revolution.
I think the test videos of these 2 boards could be very interesting for you, especially since they were tested in Australia and not in the UK and by Mr Beau Nixon who masters the LongSup rather well....

Yes I have read some of the thread and they sound like an awesome board. I think they might be a bit more expensive than the two boards I was looking at and also a long wait to get one

I think it was 12 months from go to woah for the Kalama delivery. I bought a 9 x 28 for $2650, and sunk it like a stone lol. I was well too overconfident for a large fat man, that 108 litres would be enough volume. I did manage to get it on one wave, and it seemed very nimble. Going to put it up for adoption on the sunny coast at the end of the month.

Back to the thread, it's sloppy onshore, lucky to be 2 foot here today. I was 100% certain that I would outsurf anything else in the water with this on the roof racks, and I was dead right

Love it, so far the fatboy is my favourite. A really tight but fluid turn after the take off, flows so well with the wave, and holds brilliantly for a nose ride

Thank you. I am sure that FRP will enjoy trying it on its Revo and I am overdue to try a squirrel on my Steeze (not as glamourous as teh Revo :-) )

Is it the glide of the longboard shape that makes small waves fun ,or is it the nose riding

Hi Tardy Im similar t you weight wise and also have the 8'8 flow. I bought a revolution 9x30 for a change up every now and then. Its a ripping board and yes it gives great glide a bit of nose riding fun but also step back and it rips... You need one in your quivver.

Hi Tardy, it's the fact that a good longboard can make a non surfing day fun. I was out the weekend at a break that was unrideable on anything else. But with my Naish Nalu 10' x 29 and a 10 inch fin I caught a few fun little runners. Longboards also make waiting around out the back on days like this much easier. Everyone needs a longboard in their quiver.
