Picking up a lightly used Shroom and wondered if these boards benefit from rail tape or does the design mean it's not needed?

Thanks

Either add rail tape to the board or edge tape to your paddle IMO - you need one or other other.

Sunova XXX does get chips in the rails otherwise.

Yes rail tape is needed , if you are surfing it I'm hard on rails and it keeps it looking nice

I like the Railsaver Pro on my Favorite Sunovas because the dimples give great scratch protection when I put the board on the rail in the parking lot, as I let it dry before loading into my van.

+1
Hitting two hard surfaces without something soft in between will damage them in the long run, and especially if carbon is involved.

tried something besides rspro and ended up throwing it away and buying more rspro. So use RSPro.

RSPro is definitively the highest quality possible, however:

- If you use also a paddle guard (I use 3M "Helicopter tape" 8671HS), as RSPro is textured, it will eat it up quickly

- Some rail savers are now as good as RS Pro, with the benefit of being 100% clear and smooth. I use now the Gong one (was using the 3M), but I suppose it is a kind of generic offering that can be found under many brand names. It has the advantage over the 3M to be a bit more rigid and thus better spreading the impacts, but cannot fit as well around edges as the 3M.

Thin, unbranded, helicopter (PU?) tape from Ebay (paragon tapes) works well for me, the stuff that is used on bike frames and cars to prevent stone chips, costs about 1/4 price of branded SUP tape and is thinner, so doesn't lift off sharp rails and is also invisible.

2 layers of PVC insulation tape on paddle edges, with a 3rd layer of thin helicopter tape on the shoulders of the blade will also help to keep your rails like new.

I was using insulation tape on the blade, but I now use 3M helicopter tape: more efficient and more durable.
