Where does it feel comfortable for you ??

And are you in waves or flat water paddle ing .
I can only tell you what suits me.
Flat water wrist high .wave just above the head .for me .
good luck .play around if you have a adjustable .

How tall are you? Depends on your height, thickness of the board, surfing/touring/racing. Too long and you might get shoulder problems (I did), too short and you won't have the reach. Quickblade have a pretty good sizing chart on their site, but get it right before you go getting a fixed shaft, an adjustable works just fine until you sort it out.

When I switched to a head height paddle for surfing I saw an immediate improvement in my balance.

I'm your height and my surf paddle is head high. However, it started out 8' overhead. Remember you can always cut your paddle down, but can't add length back on. Also, when reducing length, do it an inch or 2 at a time ... your paddling technique takes time to adjust.

For surfing, If you are a beginner, cut it 4" above your head.
Otherwise, cut it at your height.

After some time you will find the appropriate length for you, your board and conditions.

As a rule of thumb, short people tend to have it 1" or 2" overhead, taller ones 1"-2" less than their height. And people in bigger waves can tolerate longer paddle lengths.

I'm not a beginner but I have my surf paddle at 4" over..

But I'm old and not real flexible..

And you ride rather long boards, which have a lot of glide, and do not need the crouched position of shorter boards to power them...
