I'm looking to buy my 1st board for the summer and need some advice. I'm 85kg and about 190cm tall and like the look of the Naish and Starboard gear. Living in St Kilda i'm looking at ocean paddling and mainly on flat water and not a great deal of surf if any.
Read every post about boards on here and the 'zone until you are sick of it, then go talk to the guys at the shops near you, they're all good folks. RPS (Elwood), The ZU (St Kilda) & SHQ (Sandy) all do demos.
For what you're saying you want to do you might want to look at (in no particular order): Naish Glide/s (maybe hang fire a couple of weeks until the 2012 ones land...) Starboard Race, Open Ocean or Coast Runner Coreban Alpha (maybe?) and the Hobie Race models would be worth a look too but that will involve a drive down to Mornington (Scott Lovig Hobie, helpful folks there too)
DEMO DEMO DEMO until you've demo'd em all, should be something in that selection to float your boat
(having said that, I demo'd my arse off but had never paddled either of the boards I ended up owning - but lots of demoing schooled me about what I wanted)
We'll be down at St Kilda beach tomorrow from about 10.30am and we'll paddle from the corner of Langridge St and Beach Rd (opp the end of the breakwater) so come on down and have a go on our boards if you like.. I'll bring a spare paddle and you can maybe try a board from the Zu (ex Katani shop)
