Hi
I'm looking at getting a new board for my wife. She has only been out paddle boarding while on holidays but loves it! Wanted something she could cruise around for abit of exercise on flat water but as well catch small waves in the ocean. She would probably be spending more time in the ocean cruising around. So I guess an all rounder board which will be easier for her to use.

she is 167sm tall and weighs about 60kg.

I was looking at between the Nash Alana 9"5 and the JP Venus 9"8 which I think is the same as the JP Fusion.

dont really want to go bigger as I know she will struggle carrying the board and these 2 sizes will fit in her car.

Any suggestions on these 2 boards would be great.

Those boards a way too big.... kinda good news for you... because you could get a more performance orientated board under 9 foot - and have it as your back up (dont tell here that though!). How about a Mana (labelled as an allrounder - but with good surfing qualities)... of 8' 5" ? Even a Fanatic Allwave - 8'11" or Starboard Widepoint - 8'?". Advantages of a small person is you dont need those battleships to lug around! Anyway.. that is how I would be thinking.. imo.

Perfect choice IMO..

Yeah in my opinion, if you are cruising mostly, then you don't want anything shorter than 9'5". Personally, I wouldn't go below 10'5" for a cruising board but that's just a preference thing.

My wife is a bit bigger than your wife, but paddled both the 9'5" Mana and the 10'6" Nalu, on the same day in the same conditions.
Despite the additional weight, she much preferred the 10'6" Nalu :
Less sideways yaw with the additional length.
More stable
Different deck shape - the Nalu is a flat deck, the Mana a convex deck more suited for surfing. This was the thing that swung it, so pay attention to deck shape.

The 2014 Nalu's are not heavy.

The only problem now is that we now have 2 10' 6" Nalus, and I could use a 9'5" Mana for surfing myself!

You may consider an inflatable, with an electric pump.
The user-friendlyness of an inflatable may appeal to her (no dings, fits in any car), and you can take long ones that cruise great without transport & storage constraints.

Otherwise, the new "hybrid" shapes with some convex hull in the nose for cruising but with surfable rails are a good option too... see this topic: www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Stand-Up-Paddle/Review/New-Board-for-Wife/
Note that the new "long leaf" Tom Carroll designs may fit the bill also.

I would buy the standard version of either the JP Fusion Wood or even the Fanatic Wood Fly. At least you could ride either board yourself if need be and you would have a better chance of resale down the track.

If you are going sub 10" - get your wife one of the new Tom Caroll boards coming out soon. Super thin and fast:

Odysseus only weights about 100g more than the mana or nalu? But to someone that light.... all three are going to be like running around on top of an aircraft carrier, esp the Odysseus. Perhaps rename it the USS Nimitz!

I have both the 9'5"x32" Mana and the 9'8"x34" stable-table (Odysseus) and the difference is huge when lifting them onto the car roof..

I'm not sure what Naish quote but if it's about 100gms.. they're wrong..

Thanks for your replies.I have decided to take her down and demo a few boards. The weight will be her biggest issue for her so thanks for the heads up on the lighter boards.
