Hi there im thinking of getting this for my sup boards and just andering if anyone else has used them. I have a couple of questions that someone my be able to help me with.
1) do they make any noise or hum / rattle at all, either when they are on your car roof loaded or unloaded with boards.
2) As i sometime carry two boards, does the 2 board system allow me to securely lock in just 1 sup board, as well as 2?
3) Does the 50cm system adjust tp be able to fit a 30" sup board or do you need to go the 65cm
4) If i got only the single system can i fit another board just strapped next to it on the car roof.

Haven't used the LockRack but have one of these www.thule.com/en-au?p_id=217 . Have had it for a couple of years and works great for a single or up to 2 x race boards (have had 3 surf SUPs on it). One side slides to adjust to different width boards (have had from 27" to 33"). Seems to be pretty quiet but I do put a single twist in the strap to stop it humming.

I've been using my double SUP lockrack for about 6 months and love it!

To answer your questions.

1) No sound, you'd never know they were there.
2) I carry a single board in my double system all the time, it works fine. However, this may differ between what kind of board you are carrying. With my 30" wide nalu, I have to push the rubber retainers pretty much all the way in to get a firm grip. A narrower board may struggle.
3) I think the double sup system is 65cm by default, you only get the 50cm choice if you go single. Can't comment on this as I haven't tried the smaller one.
4) No I doubt you'd be able to do that. Better off just getting the double.

A couple of other comments...

The plastic keys you get are kind of crap. If you don't make sure they are inserted all the way into the lock, they strip very easily. You do get 4 or 5 spares so no big deal. Always carry one of these spares in your glove box just in case.

Also if your existing roof racks are quite close together (like on my car) and you are transporting a large board, an extra 'security strap' at the front might be required just for piece of mind. When I'm transporting smaller boards it's no big deal.

The black rubber on the base of the system transfers it's colour quite easily. I wouldn't transport boards that aren't in a bag (especially damp) or else you will end up with ugly black marks all over the grip on your board (assuming that's what it will be resting on during transport).

Guys that's awesome advice..I have a 28'1/4 Deep Minion..And I always transport it with a bag..my other board is a 29' Fanatic Prowave..but 90% of the time I just carry the minion

So that's a 9'6" Mana with a 11' Nalu on top of my double LockRack, no room for the Javelin so had to improvise ;-)


Pretty much what JoffaDan says, so easy to transport boards, black marks come off with magic eraser. Keys are absolute rubbish.

Thanks Mate..appreciate the help. Apart from keys sounds like a good product. I use Kanu lock straps at present which are good but a system that u can just click in appeals. Has anyone tried the SUP taxi system or the new Yakima SUPUp system

Kia ora bro fitted the double sup lockrack yesterday. Nothing like well designed easily fitted componentry eh! I can see for single boards under 30" you might have to have the racks closer together at least or put a pad or something on the arms to get it to clamp it properly. I'll find out in a few weeks when the hypernut turns up. If you know you'll only be transporting one board then the single sup model has merit. Haven't stripped a key yet, comes with four and as long as you keep the frothing at the beach under control and don't rush it all should be good. Haven't tried the Thule or Yakima but beauty of Lockrack is single sided loading and not having to faff with ties. Also not sure how they would cope with two sups stacked.

No wind sound at all.
I tend to keep the arms on the rack if I'm in and out of the water over a period of time.
Just lock them horizontally.
Defo get the double.

That's good to.hear that there's no external noise. My biggest concern is will the double sup system at 65cm, I think..allow me to securely carry my minion at 28"1/4 wide. Would rather not have to adapt it by adding extra padding etc..
Otherwise my only other option is to go single sup system but then I can carry two boards.

Had the double lock rack for a while, works fantastically well, really quick to load and you can leave one board on the roof and know it's secured! I've driven 2000km's with the rack and 2 14ft DW boards in place and it was rock solid.

Only issue is watch the soft keys and yes the angle on the lock rack arms means that you will have difficulty securing a single board. (I literally have to leave my 10' x 30" board under my 8'5 x 29" board to make the system work if the board is not in a bag.)

Remember though you purchase the singles arms or the surf ski arms etc separately and then you can use the system regardless of how many boards you intend to load for the day. (From what I can see the single arms are canted inwards at a steeper angle and should grip a narrower board pretty easily)

I have the 50cm base with short and long arms.
A 30" on the bottom and a 26" on top is no problem with the long arms.
When there is one board on to I use the shorter arms.

I damaged the first key, but I found out that when you push the arm against the board and rotate the key at the same time it will go smooth.
No problems since then.

Awesome guys thanks so much..looks like I might have to go single lock rack..As I only carry my minion 90% of the time..And always in a bag. I wasn't aware you could just by the arms but that would be good to solve the 2 board solution? Do you know how much just for the double arms only?

Only Issue with only getting the single arms is you don't solve your one board to 2 board issue, the base length will need to be right, essentially the 550mm base will probably just fit on its closest setting Your minion, an you would need to put it out to widest setting for both boards with the Fanatic on the bottom, I think the 650mm base either way will be too big.

And the cost difference is minimal so why not go for the bigger rack to start with, ask your local retailer if they can supply you with this set up. It Should work.

Good idea, How do you reattach the middle section when you need it wider? Did you have to get extra hardware and drill a hole? Would love to see some pics.

Edit: I think I get it now (need coffee). The board floats over the gap. Then you can push the two together for narrower vessels.

Cut in half, drill a hole right under the hole in top rubber, for sliding just release .

Kia ora tried the 28" hypernut on my double sup lockrack tonight and it was........... great! Clamped it with a notch or two in the arms spare. Key thing i think though was it was in a well padded board bag. So supmaori I think the minion would be fine provided you used a bag. Chur

Kia ora bro, well secure, depending on how far forwards or backwards you have the board the arms will have one notch each left in travel or 2 notches on front and none on the rear arm. Its seems pretty comfortable, with a bit of headroom to spare. I had visions of removing the short rubber pads in the middle of the fixed sections (there are 2 long pads and one centre short pad in each of the 2 fixed sections) and cable tieing that to the bottom of the arm for padding...........but as per above its just not needed. And I don;t think I'll be getting anything narrower than 28" in the future. Arms look ginormous at first viewing but now getting used to them. Having said that when one board is on there is not a lot left poking above armwise and it looks good. The kayak version seems a reasonable option if you're at all concerned, would be good for bigger surfboards too maybe but might be too short for large SUPS , which is prob not you anyway. But overall the Lockrack is a fantastic bit of kit, haven't stripped any of the keys yet (I'm careful to push arm in at same tme as unlocking, I'm really enjoying this system.

Just got my lockracks and put them on my whisper bars. What a sweet product. Secure as and looks mint too. Installation was easy. I got the single sup base(50cm) with double arms. Easily secured my minion 7'8 when it was only board on...and with my fanatic 8'6 on as well..( with the front and back arms out almost to last notch) secured both boards, which was a relief..!No more straps for me..or messing about in the cold. As others have said..the plastic keys you have to be careful with..a little push in on the arms as you unlock does the trick...but I'm looking at getting a metal one made up for piece of mind.

How long have these racks been around and has anyone had any trouble with them (excluding the plastic keys)
Unless you don't want the warrenty I'd advise against modifications.
