Hi folks. I am currently looking at buying a sup as it looks like damn fun from the shore. I want a board mostly foe surf but that can also do a little cruzing when camping by lakes etc. I have done minimal surfing, so not much experience but can Snowboard etc.

I am 5.10 and weigh in at a whopping 85kg. I have done some searching and on my limited budget have found 3 second hand boards. A Naish Hokua 9.6, a Naish Mana 9.5 and a Simon Anderson 10. The SA board is sligthly more expensive but in the best condition.Does anyone have any thoughts on which one I should go with. Your advice would be most appreciated. Cheers.

Im gunna cop it for this but what the hell:
The hokua is the most performance oriented of the 3 and NOT a cruiser (ever) the mana is very stable, slow, and cumbersome in the surf, but ever so slightly better paddler for crising (slightly) the SA is the better cruiser by far and not a bad surfer BUT not even close to the quality of the naish boards in construction.
My advise would be to go the hokua as its hands down the best surfing board of all three - once you get hooked on surfing it you wont wanna paddle it anywhere other than back out for another wave.

i was the same when i started and hear it on these forums all the time everyone wants a board that does both but in the end you end up with a board that does niether very well i agree with billboard go the performance surf and then get a flatwater race board if u want to do both

Cool, thanks for the info. My initial thinking was the Simon Anderson 10.... but now you have given me food for thought. I think the Naish Hokua is 2 years old vs a New S.A. anyone else have the same opinion? Or different? Cheers.

So say you are talking your wife into a SUP, something like a Naish Nalu 10' 6.6" to go paddling on flat water and a second one like a Naish Hokua 9'10" for yourself to mainly surf with but go paddling with her on flat water once a week, would the Hokua be suitable?
My reasoning being....
I don't have a SUP, was thinking about the Nalu 10 6.6 to learn in the surf (have a surfing background but no SUP background) The wife may have a go occasionally. One year later upgrade to a more surf orientated board. . . . . Or buy 2!
The advantages seem obvious to me but would the Hokua be suitable for me with a flat water paddle with the wife on the Nalu

Careful of some of the advise. A lot of people give recommendations based of what works for them, without reading what your really after.
Seeing that you've got a limited budget (no need for 2 boards) and little surfing experience. Go for the bigger boards that offer more stability. I have talked to people that really enjoy the versatility of the mana.
Pick something that you feel comfortable with.

Sorry, I wasn't giving advice. I am going through a similar process as to what board to get.
I was asking the question, would a 9'10" Hokua be okay to paddle on flat water while my wife is on a larger board? Hence getting two boards.

I have a 9.5 Naish Mana and really enjoy it. Fun in the surf (I go out in very small waves and up to about four feet) and still ok for cruising around looking at the scenery. Started with a shorter, narrower board and too difficult when it was choppy. Then went to a 10 ft Mana - too big for surfing. The 9.5 is a really good all round IMO.

And just to add to the above; I am 5'8" and 75kg. I was a very average surfer, a very good canoeist and an excellent telemark skier. So my 'paddle and balance skills' allowed me to progress fairly quickly in many aspects of SUP but I still got trashed if the beach breaks got steep! The Mana 9.5 meant I could quickly have a lot of fun and I still really enjoy the board even while my skills progress.

Cheers for all the good advice. I am leaning towards the Simon Anderson 10. It's in an auction site so will see if it goes in my budget..
