Nice looking board seems like it can handle small chop, so Naish have stopped making 12'6" race boards then

Yowsa! Ok I have found my Naish love again, time for a new board.. or maybe two! I'm lusting over the 26" Maliko - the added rocker AND volume are just what it needed.
I also am liking that Jav, though the tail looks a bit freaky..
Either way, thanks for the improvements Robbie.. and the colours are sort of cool too.

Hey guys,
so I am looking for a new board. And was originally looking at the new Maliko because I have only money for one board and will do some Downwind and open ocean stuff but am also racing flatwater (Tech, and long distance). Has anyone tested the maliko for turns? Cause the tail is not exactly made for that. The 2019 semmed better as an alrounder board for racing in different conditions. What do you guys think

Is there any published or measured weight already available in particular for the Maliko 26" and 28" and the Javelin 24"?

Thanks.

If it was good news, I'm sure they would have told us :)

True.
The true and correct weight of the 2018/2019 26" Maliko was not disclosed truthfully until the 2019 catalogue. Before that it was reported something like 24 lbs when it is actually 28~29 lbs. Still a great board regardless (except for the roof rack).

My (almost) local Naish provider of used and demo boards (Maliko and Javelin) is talking of bringing the 2020 models and he knows that I always look at end of the season deals....I will resist firmly! Yes I will.......

Yes. The 2017 Maliko was light but fragile I think, so for 2018 they concentrated on getting the board tough rather than light. I think that was the right thing to do.

Hopefully they have found a happy medium with the new construction this year. However I am amazed that Jimmy Lewis, Infinity etc can make boards that a both light and durable, and sometimes at a cheaper price than Naish. I wonder why the Cobra factory cannot replicate what they do in Vietnam?

I have a couple of Hypr Nalu Hawaii boards, which are both very tough and extremely pretty (made with thick exotic tropical hardwood veneers and a wooden stringer). They cost no more than many standard big-brand boards. Take a look
at this, for instance:

www.hyprnalu.com/kaimana-details?lightbox=dataItem-j96cvey43

It highlights how poor value many of the big-brand SUPs are these days IMO. If the big brands are to stay in business in the face of increasing competition at the budget end of the market, IMO they are going to have to up their game and provide a product that is clearly better-made than the cheapo boards.

But construction apart, I'd be interested to try the new Naish race boards. However, at these prices, it's hard to buy a completely new design without trying it first. Pretty much all the main brands have produced at least one turkey at some point over the last 12 years. And you wouldn't have known that they were just by looking at them.

Naish weights for the 14 x 23 (only one I've weighed so far as 26" has sold out) was 10.6kg. Pretty good. Price is $3399 which is also pretty good. Cheapest top end raceboard I know of in OZ.
2017,18 and 19 Malikos were not Cobra built boards and the struggle to get the weight to strength ratio right has led Naish back to Cobra it seems. Good decision as so far the boards seem tough and at a competitive weight.
Paddle the board and you will like it, particularly if you're an ocean guy.
Sam.

Does anyone here has any exprience with the Javelin 2020 14 x 22? No chance to test... I hear it's (a little) heavier, wich is probably why they don't mention the weight on the website, but does this really affect the performance that much for an average paddler like me? Also looking at the Fanatic Strike 2020...
cheers,
Karl

Hey. I did paddle javelin 22' last sunday on a lake- dead flat. I also paddled sic RS 21,5 to compare. Each only about 10min after 12km race. The weight was ok and compared to sic - I did not noticed any big difference. Also stability was pretty much the same, maybe javelin bit more stable- maybe due to wider tail and lower standing position. But the feel was also pretty much the same.
A week before that, I paddled 2020 SB Sprint 20,75, Again, after the race for 10min. The big difference is weight as Sprint is noticably hevier than javelin and RS, at least to carry, after the race. But it was stable for its width - standing position is low, feels almost on water level and drain holes do their work pretty well.
As for strike, I believe it is the same design as 2019, just different colour. I think strike and sprint are more flat water dedicated than javelin and RS, but it all comes down to the paddler's skill&power and preferences (as always) - it looks Casper is handling javelin pretty well :-) .
So, for us, average paddlers, the weights of the javelin and strike are to close to eachother to notice difference while paddling and to decide, it comes more to design preference, I think.
Cheers
